There should be an axle code on the sticker inside the drivers door that has a code on it. If you tell us what year the truck is I'm sure we could list the axle codes. My axle ratio is also listed on a sticker on the front axle.
Find yer axle ratio on the label in the drivers` door jamb. Match it to the chart. Your owners manual has the towing capacity in it. You need to know exactly what configuration you have. I know guys with a 4.6 that claim they have a pretty high towing capacity. Do a little homework , it`s worth the effort.
This can be easy to identify, but what if someone changed the gears without documentation? For positive identificationl you can open up the cover and count the gears on the ring gear as well as the pinion gear, then figure the ratio.
You can also do a calculation using the tire diameter, RPM, and vehicle speed to figure out the ratio. It is not an exact science but it would help to have a somewhat accurate tach.
Go to the Super Duty Forum, look for Super Duty FAQ, go to rolling chassis, then look for the calculators.
