Has anyone experience with E6TE high swirl cylinder heads? Can they cause a detonation (ping) at idle. Timing at idle (680 RPM) is 10 deg and will go to 30 deg at higher RPM. Engine temp 190 deg. The engine has a diesel sound at 680 RPM and is gone at 800 RPM The ECC IV system is working properly.
The engine is a 1987 port injected 302, with no modifications.
Any ideas?
You might have an injector or two that are plugged, allowing a lean condition to exist at a lower rpm. Or could have one that's blown the tip, alllowing it to flood the cylinder. The E6 heads are more sensitive to timing according to Ford though and get by on less timing.
Thanks for the information on the not so common E6TE cylinder heads. I will play with the timing and look at the spark plugs for signs of injector problems. I plan to try some higher octane fuel to see if it makes a difference. I think it's pistons, but it doesn't sound like pistons.

Are they E6TE, or E6SE heads ? Look at the lower front corner of the passenger side head, next to the valve cover. There you will find a letter cast. If that letter is an "S", then those are E6SE heads, which are the high swirl, fast burn heads. If there's a "T" cast there, those are the std truck head, which are not the high swirl fast burn heads.
Haven't found the S or T yet, is it on the intake side or exhaust). But, when I had the heads off they were the same as this link http: .diyporting.com/E6TE.html (not sure if I can post a link, so this should do) The engine is from a 1987 T Bird. Oil pressure is 35 hot and 45 cold. I plan to put about 300 miles on the engine next week end and should know more after the trip. If I tell you this engine is not in a truck, will I be banished for the forum ? I hope not. You guys are good.
The letter is cast outside of the valve cover, in the lower front corner of the valve cover. The same letter will appear in the lower rear of the driver's side head. 87 T-Bird should have E6SE heads if I recall. These have an "S" in that location.
