Advance Timing.

I'm running a single pattern cam(roller) lift .498 adv. duration 282 with shaved H.O. heads. My timing is set at 10*and I'm wondering if I should run it at 12*and how many RPM's at idle? My idle is set at 700.

By the way the engine is a 302 Mustang GT with a 600 cfm Edelbrock and performer air gap intake.

Ditto, run as much timing as the fuel you're using will tolerate. Sounds like you've got an E303 cam.

Depending on how much your heads were worked... you should be able to run 18* or more on premium fuel and 13-15* on 87 octane.

Like hemi said, advance it until you hear it ping, and then retard it a little.

ive always been curious what exactly a "ping" sounded like. ive tried to do this on my 302, and never really heard a ping. of course ive only advanced it to about 12-14 myself..

Pinging is also refered to as "valve clatter", this is usually heard in accelleration. When I first fired off my 331, the tank was full of 87 octane, in that instance, it didn't ping, it was more like gravel being crushed in the cylinders.
