another rear main thread

OK,the fresh engine has been leaking at the rear main since we fired it.The trans. is out and we're ready to start putting her back together.Did we get it in backward? I put the other seal in facing out like the first pic.The protective sleeve is bigger on one side, should it go in with that side out?

and what is the spacer/shim for?

The sleeve goes on the crank with the smaller or "beveled" edge facing the rear of the truck, the sleeve is to pilot the seal lip over the crank. So slip the sleeve over the crank, then the seal plate and seal, now once the bolts are started you can pull the sleeve out. The ring I believe is for driving the seal into the plate and is intended to be tapped flush with the plate to set the appropriate seal depth. I did mine out of the truck and had to tap the seal a bit farther in so it didn't ride in the groove of the old one, and 18,000mi later its bone dry. Oh and the seal is in the right way.

The CDR is clean and the I put the seal in like 84-6.9L said but it leaked from first start-up.I was lookin' at the crank last night and I may just order a seal with a wear sleeve.I didn't think there was any more groove in the crank than any eng. I've done.I wonder if the seal material is less forgiving than a good old rubber seal.I might just have to drive it a little father into the cover.I just don't want to have to pull the trans. again.

I'm ordering a BS40697 Fel-Pro w/ wear sleeve.I think it will be a little insurance since I can feel a hint of wear on the crank.
