Giving Thanks

My friends,

While I have a moment, I'd like to convey a few thoughts, about giving Thanks.

This past year has brought many set-backs and some very depressing times.
It has been a year of terrible 'loss' for me and for my family.
As you know, I lost my Dad, and a woman that I cared for (deeply), many years ago.

Still, today is the day before Thanksgiving.
I have many things to be thankful for.

I have my health (well, for being a gray-haired old fart, I'm 'relatively' healthy.)
I have my beloved wife and four GREAT kids.
These kids have their health and associated loved ones. (Except for Brad. He's still 'working' on that cute little blonde, in his English class. Ha!)
My English Springer Spaniel ("Russell") is going through another bout of health issues, but, he's still with us, and acts like he's still a pup.
My Mom is 'hanging on', even though she is not the healthiest 89 year old woman, the world's ever seen.
I have a magnificient 1-1/2 year old grand-daughter, and my oldest daughter will be giving birth to a boy, on the 26th!!

This Nation is Free.
I want to give Thanks to all of our men and women that are in our Armed Forces, and to those that have served.
Without them, this Nation would not be Free.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your Service to this GREAT Nation, we call The United States of America!!!!

I have FTE.
FTE is the one place that I can come to, and not listen (read) a bunch of arguing, fussin', fightin' and basic _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. . . and for that . . . I am Thankful.

I have found some really great friends, here. For that, I am truly Thankful.

IF you are traveling this year, please be careful!!

So. . . . I'll stop floppin' my chops, and just say -

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, Ford Truck Enthusiasts!!!!!!!

Now, I gotta start making preparations for the deep-fried turkey, stuffing ('dressing'), rolls, sweet potato cassarole, green bean cassarole, and then driving to my son's house, for the meal.
The whole family is meeting there, and for the first time in 25 years, I don't have to clean up the mess!!!!!
For that. . . . I am very thankful!!!!!!!! Let's eat!!!!!

I will tell you a story.

In primitive times, FAT was the best part that could be harvested from an animal, because it was very hard to maintain weight. Organ meats and such - much as liver pies , liver and onions, and those things are prised in Germanic cookery.

It is because fat is a source of energy that is used last by the body (true)

Simple sugars are consumed first, next are complex sugars (or carbohydrates - such as starches)

FAT is the second to last things our bodies hold in reserve, and is why they are so hard to get rid of.

BUT!

The very last reserve is when the body canniballises its own protein (muscle tissues) in order to serve as fuel

For this reason - ancient hunters considered the liver, heart, and organ meat to be the prizes of the hunting party - because they would typically have to chase their prey for many miles. It restored them at the end of the hunt...

DISCOVERY CHANNEL did a wonderful docudrama about that once upon a time.

Starches are cerial grains, potatoes, macaroni, wheat, rice, and such. When you eat things made from them - you are fueling yourself with a lasting slow release source of energy!

Simple sugars are obvious - cane sugar and all that. They give you a boost - but if there is nothing behind it, it fails and leaves you in a depressed state.

1) Simple sugars in your blood will fail in about 15 minutes
2) Complex sugars kick in after 15-20 minutes and carry you farther. *The REASON for this is that the body has to break them down first, before they can be useful
3) After forty minutes - you are now (if you have been working hard) burning fat, which is your second to last reserve...
4) If you exceed all of that - your body will begin to take itself apart (LITERALLY!) When you run out of fat - you are in trouble

*Body building 101

*NOTE: "CARTILAGE" is primarily made of fat tissue, and lubricated by it. Without fat, arthritis is a certainty

Fats come in two flavors:

Saturated
Unsaturated

~In general, if it turns solid at room temperature - it is a saturated fat.

THOSE are the kind that cause heart problems...

Unsaturated fats remain liquid, oils of different kinds
*Without any fat, your body will be ruined. It is recommended that at least ten percent of your intake be of "GOOD" fats

~Enough out of me!

Happy Turkey day!!!

Great sentiments Keith

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

P.S. Nobody likes to do house-cleaning on a holiday, so let's keep this thread in the spirit that the OP intended it to be

A very trying year up to Oct.
I lost both my parents in less than 9 months, but it's time to move on now.

I have a new dream home on the river, and a VERY happy wife and kids, plus a great job working with my best friend.........Ironically, I have more to be thankful for this year than ever before.

Have a great T-day, FTEers!

Yes, Thanksgiving is certainly a time to focus on the glass being half full as opposed to half empty. We all have a lot to be thankful for. Hope all y'all had a good one.

The prurpose of thanksgiving day, is to be thankful for a good harvest - with enough things to tide us over during the time of winter, when no new things can come from the ground as crops.

Hard times, when the wildlife retreat to their dens so that even hunting becomes a skimpy way to survive.

In these times our ancestors laid up and preserved supplies gained throughout the years efforts in order to make it through the winter.

On that day of thanks - we consume the excess so that it can be enjoyed and fattenning ourselves so that we could survive - before we had to "Hunker Down" for the cold months to come -

Such is no longer needful, and that of all things (trade, all around the world) we can be thankful for indeed.

It is no longer quite so necessary to frugally guard whatever we have gathered to live on in those times

~AMEN

That is what thanksgiving is all about...
