Extra HP?

I Just started racing my mud truck this year, and Im looking to squeeze every little bit out of the motor (390). Anyone know of some easy things to do to get a little extra HP?

And also, as far as building the motor up, any suggestions on a crank, cam, ect...?

if its a late 70's early 80's motor, they were underpowered (low compression) motors due to smog regulations from the factory. search the forums, there is alot of info on building these motors

Car Craft did a 390FE build a few years ago. It's linked in the last post of the tech thread sticky.

fastest cheapest power is nitrous. That motor will probably handle at least a 100 shot before things go boom, but I'd definitely use race gas and probably use an msd box to retard the timing under spray.

Maybe a straight up timing install, then headers and exhaust.

Remember exterior eng mods may put you in a different class?? And then the fun really begins....

Yes on the timing, intake, carb, headers and elec up grade. Then comes the clutch, or transmission, then the 1310 u-joints and the in put/out put flanges on the t case and HD drive shafts. Then chrome moly axles and a locker and a spool and drive flanges and traction bars, regearing the axles will come in with bigger tires. Then the front end blows up when you launch out of a hill and a hole with the juice just a making that 390 scream and you will be looking for a D60 and stuff it with $$$

Maybe regearing should be right in there with the timing, intake and carb?

Here you go as a idea...EB but you get it right?

Another question....I was planning on relocating the radiator to behind the cab in the box, as far as the Electric fan goes, can I just find any electric fan and fab it to fit over my radiator, or do I need a specific one?

A set of fans out of a taurus are a common swap and easy to do. So this truck is mud runner now only? Get started on water proofing toy elc compartment and electric items in there. The distributor is #1 and coil.

With that 6' lift and 38's or 39's toy are planning on running as long as the tires are getting traction from some HP mods, you should stay on top and the rad outa the mud.

Check out this

Look up the last post tech thread sticky for info on electric fans. The dual Taurus or single monster Lincoln Mark VIII from the JY is a good low buck solution.
