1999 4.0 XLT 4X4, I just had all 4 shocks replaced and upper and lower ball joints replaced and now the 4 wheel drive does not engage . On the dash both the the lights for 4 wheel high and low flash about three times and than go out. Any ideas what could have gone wrong. thanks
Does your '99 have the pulse vacuum type hubs? I don't know when they stopped using that system, but the vacuum hoses are exposed to the elements and get pretty brittle. With all of the work done in that general area the hoses may have been damaged. I have a '98 and I ended up replacing the vacuum hubs with manual locking hubs from Rugged Ridge. So far they work great.

Can you hear the shift motor working when you turn to 4x4?
I've not noticed any noise from it before, so I don't know what a "normal" sound would be. I don't do much recreational four wheeling. Mostly just out of necessity.
You should hear the motor locking the transmission, kind of like the sound of the transmission
As luck would have it, my wife was rear-ended while driving my Ranger and it's in the shop, so it'll be a while before I can give a listen, provided it doesn't get totalled...
