I have 2011 XLT 4x2 with the chrome package, but looking to black out the truck, so looking for interchangable items so that i can always go back to chrome in the future..
I know and read that the raptor wont work without some mods to the front, like hood and fenders.. but what about the other models that have all black grills? are there any that can be swapped??
As far as I know, all trim levels, Raptor excluded, should interchange. I have seen several FX4s with Platinum or XLT chrome grills. Looks good either way.
In my crash catalog, we show 2009-2012, as long as it is not a raptor. Go pick up an inexpensive aftermarket XL grille and swap your badge over, good to go.
I loved my 07's black grille being it was just an XL. there is soo many different grilles on the latest gen trucks... mine has a ton of horizontal bars on it.. everyone else i see only has 4-5 bars.

Yup I changed the black grill on my 09 FX4 black and gray 2 tone with a platinum it was easy and quick only about 5 clips best I recall. One thing about a Ford OEM it comes with clips just in case you need em
i'd check out the grill for an STX. IMO, it's about the sexiest with the black bars in the center but a painted surround.
XL grill is all black, but it has the textured surround and will forever look like a government truck no matter what you do to the truck otherwise ... JMHO
go OEM. the fit is perfect! and dont worry about the horror storied people say about removing there grill, its not hard at all. just got to have a little man muscle, Baha Baha
I did something on my '13 XLT I'm sure others have done; I masked off the chrome outer surround, hood, and center badge(it was more difficult to remove than I thought), popped the hood and threw an old blanket over the whole front of the truck, lowered the hood 'till ALMOST closed, painted the grille a semi-gloss black, waited a bit, removed all masking and the blanket, and VOILA! a grille that looks like the factory SHOULD have made! Well, I like it anyway, and have gotten compliments on it........
