I have a 99 F250 with 74000 on it and the dealer is telling me that I need new ball joints. Does anyone know if this is normal for this truck? Also is it something that I could do myself?
Some of the non-greasable ball joints do not last. So maybe.
There are a few threads here about replacing them and some pretty good advice on the EASY way.
Don't remember the specifics, do a search.
Some dealers are good at "creating" bussiness so save your self some grief and get a second opinion if you are not having any unusual front end noises and the steering feels tight. On the other hand on these heavy trucks, worn BallJoints can and do go unnoticed and can be dangerous.
My ride had about 80,000 on it when I needed ball joints. 2000 F250 SC SB 4x4. I don't go off road much at all, but I do plow my lot about 5-10 times per year.
I looked into replacing them myself, but thought it to be too daunting a task for a geek like me. There is an independant shop locally that did the job including alignment for like $480. The Ford Garage wanted north of $650 for the upper and lowers. I will have to look to see if that $480 is right. They were going to put on MOOG greasable joints but when they had the truck apart, realized that they didn't have them in stock. They had to run over to the Ford Garage and use non-greasable OEM joints. I wished they had told me that. I would have opted to take the truck back when they had the parts I wanted. Hopefully these will last another 80k. Maybe I will have my X by then....
Many thanks for the advise. I am going to get a second opinion on the matter. And will have greasable joints put in if they do indeed need to be replaced. And will have the work done someplace other than the dealership.
