my fuel gauge isn't reading properly ill fill it up and it will stay full until i get to about 1/4 or less of gas left in the truck is there some way to fix this issue? thank you for taking the time to read this
The fuel sending units are not very reliable in these trucks. About every one by now has given trouble to it's owner. You can try a new one and see if it helps the problem.
Well, first you need to figure out what truck you have, what engine setup, and see if the parts stores carry them. Some of them are hard to get. So just plug into Autozone or your favorite parts place online and see if they have it.
Then run it as low on fuel as you can. Fuel is very heavy if you need to drop the tank a little bit. If you do not mind working in tight spaces, you can sometimes work the sending unit out without dropping the tank if you are working on the front/side tank. If you need to drop the tank some, make sure you tie it somehow to a floor jack or something, it's still going to be awkward and heavy. Some people take the bed loose and raise it up to get access also. It's a lot of work though, and has it's own drawbacks.
Get the thing out, and before you put it back in the tank, turn the key to run and work the float up and down while looking at the fuel gauge, making sure it works like it should.
P.S. The sending unit is held in place by a locking ring. You will need to take a hammer and punch, and knock this ring around to loosen the unit.

oh, you're no fun - doing it on a full tank is so much more of a challenge a redneck can be proud of
but honestly, i have dropped and/or opened full tanks at times in various vehicles, and while its a bit more of a challenge, it can be done. if i were to plan ahead for dropping a full tank, i would choose a transmission jack to support it, though i usually don't plan ahead enough to bring it and just use a piece of 2x4 on top of my floor jack.
and don't forget the cigars
You can always buy a siphon and drain the tank into a suitable container. Use the tank you want to drop untill half a tank or there abouts and use a couple of 5 gallon gas cans etc...
Or if you have two tanks, drain one tank down to empty with the other one full, work on the empty tank, and repeat for the other tank when it gets empty...
Before replacing it let's figure out what the problem is. Mine had the same problem, but just cleaning the plug at the selector made mine work a lot better. Course that would require you letting us know what the truck is.
Autozone has those for 76-100 dollars. That's without the pump. Look up the fuel tank lock ring on there while you are at it. The have a good picture of it, and it will let you know what you are dealing with when you try to remove it. You might want to get one, if you bugger the old one up, and it comes with a new o-ring.
