Hey fella's: what are the transmissions that will bolt up to a 390 in a 64 f-100. I went to change clutch in the np435 that someone had installed and ran smack into a night mare. They had put in tranny and then welded the cross member in place with out evr intending to have to remove it while they had it. Can not get trnny out far enough to clear clutch and shaft without cutting and re-welding. So I'll run it until it goes boom and replace it with a rather well thought ou replacement. So I need some ideas on replacements Please.
Any of the Ford transmissions offerred for the FE will obviously bolt on. These would cover the complete trans line, C4 (though not as tough in my opinion), C6, 3 speed column shift and 4 speed floor shift. Take your pick, or install your preference...

They put the FE infront of the FMX tranny too - it is a steel case and if built correctly very very strong !
I have seen 352's with the c4 -but nothing bigger !
Edit : some of the 332's has a 2 speed tranny also if you want to go real old school!

As for changing the clutch I would just pull the motor if you have access to a hoist. I've done it this way before and it isn't that hard, it can be out and back in within a day easily and then it is easier to work on the clutch too
I'd say cut the cross member out, it's gonna have to be done sooner or later unless you like hand balming np-435's out through the hood area... They're heavy and aren't meant to come out that way trust me on that.
Thanks for the avice guy's. I to don't believe in pulling the np through the hood, being that the shifter is about 2'-0" long and is a top loader. I like the idea of a auto with it's ease of operation, however i also like the 4 speed manual for it's umph. I'm leaning toward the c-6 with a shift kit, but since I've never done a conversion I'm a little hesitant.

The stick on a 435NP is easy to remove. Pull the big cover in the floor, and there is a retaining ring holding the stick in the tranny. Push down, turn counterclockwise and it will come free. Not easy, if it's the first time you're doing it Use gloves, or you will cut yourself up.
Enlightenment- I luv it. That's why I use trhis site exlusively. I learn something everytime I visit. Thanks Krewat. I saw that ring when I took the seat ,carpet and cover off. Kinda wonder'd what it was for. What would be a good 4 speed replacement for the np without the super low ratio's? Or can that be more resolved with differential size? I've been told that the guy who owned this truck for 13 years put in a 4:11 but I can't confirm that since there is not a tag on the pumpkin.
My mistake, I thought you were more concerned about getting a new clutch in the truck, from what I've heard np 435s are bulletproof. Just offering an alternative to chopping and rewelding the crossmember.

I start out in 2nd all the time unless I'm pulling a HUGE load, which is not very often. Even when I have 2 tons in the bed, I could start in 2nd without a real problem. I have 4.11 rear, 4.10 front.
I've heard there is a 5-speed version of the 435NP (called something else) that is just as bulletproof but has an overdrive. I'm sure someone here will chime in!
My existing 435NP has over 300K miles on it and still going...
Lift the rear tires off the ground, make sure the brakes are not grabbing, put the tranny in neutral. Mark one of the tires with chalk, and see how many driveshaft revolutions it takes to turn the wheel one turn. That will be the gear ratio.
Didn't mean to sound short Freejay. You obviously knew that the shifter could be disengaged from the tranny and I didn't. I apreciate your advice as I do all that have responded. However here's the clicker- in my path of restoration I also use this truck for hunting, fishing, and work. I don't really have the time to pull the engine/tranny at once due to the envolved procedures. This why I'm trying to decide on options that I can prpare for (gathering all needed supplies) so that when work slows during the fall and winter I can tackle this head on-as long as the clutch holds till then. I'm going to determine the ratio today of the rear end. I run at about 4500 rpms at 65- is nromal to the 435??
Are you guessing at the RPM or are you getting it from the tach? Assuming you have 26 inch tires you would need 5.30 gears to turn that many at 65MPH. Might have that tach set on 6 cylinder mode. That is in 4th of course.
To be honest that is a guess. I know I need to get a tach , however going by sound of the exhaust compared to rpm rev's while up shifting I know I'm pretty close. I'll check the ratio and get a tach if the wife allows it. And yes that is in 4th
