Serious answer? Buy several large storage tubs with snap on covers at Wally world i.e tupperware etc a box or two of ziplock freezer bags and a permanent marker for each tub. Put one or two boxes of bags and a marker in each tub Put parts new or used in a bag for each assembly and label the bag with the marker put instructions in the bag with the parts. Label the end of the tubs with subassemblies: front end, engine, transmission, dashboard, etc. Clear an area of the shop/house where you can stack the tubs. Carry the appropriate tub over to where you are working and work out of it, take out only a bag or two at a time. Replace the bags and cover the tub every night, never leave the shop with any bags out of it's tub or loose parts laying around.
I am still looking for my distributor clamp and capscrew that I removed a month ago. I have turned my shop upside down and no luck. Oh well, I'm a couple of years away from completion. I'm sure it will turn up before then.

Happens to me all the time . Spending money on a set of spare parts works every time . It's somewhat disturbing because the parts are not always in ziplock bags (too large) . I think I may be getting mature (old)
Back when I worked as a wrench I used a roll around tool cart. Invariably while in the middle of a job I'd reach for a tool that I just used and now couldn't be found anywhere. Search the car, search the cart, search the bench, search the tool box, nothing. Sometimes if you took one step back from the tool cart, turned around and faced the other direction,s tand for at least 30 seconds then turn back to the tool cart.
Viola! there's the tool, righ there on top of all the others in the tool cart....AAAAGH!
At the beginning of building my truck I misplaced my favourite huge flat screwdriver, I know it is there somewhere. But I've searched everywhere, nook and crannies too. I'm beginning to think it is or might be some where in the truck, welded in behind a panel or cross member or something.
Get a wife. Then you can ask her where everything is.
Amen to that. Somehow she knows and saves me a lot of time looking. Not as useful in the garage as she doesn't spend much time there but inside the house things don't get lost. Might take a little longer to find than I'd like but she can always locate.

I'm gonna try and teach my dog to find tools - She's a Shepard/Lab mix - I guess it would be the metal/grease sent - Hopefully if I can get her trained she won't be trying to bring my hands and feet to me - Just a thought
I rebuilt the complete inside of a house we had when I was young -I just remembered where I set the roll of film documenting the whole thing - on the 2x4 in the west living room wall under the plasterboard !! Dave s
