Inline Six timing

Somewhere I read on this forum or on another website that the ignition timing on a inline six should be advanced a few degrees from the 6 BTC recommended by Ford. Can any of you I6'ers out there tell what timing works best for this stock engine?

This takes a little effort, but works OK. Time the engine at 6 degrees BTC and drive it. Listen for it knocking both under acceleration and steady highway speed. If it's not knocking, advance the timing slightly and drive the truck again, listening for knocking. As you repeat this process, you will eventually hear the engine knocking. Once you hear spark knock, you've gone too far and will have to back off a tad. The grade of gasoline you use will also figure in. You can advance the timing further if you use quality high-test.

The timing setting just before spark knock is not necessarily the best timing setting for an engine, especially not one with 8-8.5 compression like most 300's. The best way to experiment is on a dyno, dragstrip, etc. where actual gains can be measured.
