Engine tear down is fun. Putting it back together is a long process getting everything torqued right, and resealed. It is tough but a great learning experience
Yeah. I am trying to re-invent the wheel as little as possible but it seems like guys who do nothing but this are constantly learning new tricks so this attempt in largely in vain. I am glad I am doing the 302 I have right now as it seems pretty forgiving. FE's need to be spot on. Plus not putting a frankenmotor together from countless different sources should eliminate a thread of difficulty.
The crap I have had to scrounge from one motor or another to make the 302 work in a boat is freaking crazy. Its got components from 4 or 5 different engines in it right now. All Ford parts but never assembled in this combination.
Just gotta find the best parts n throw them together and see Whatcha get. Fortunately there is a huge aftermarket for the SB ford motors, unfortunately for the 390,not so much
Thats kinda what the plan is.... I want to do the boat motor right but don't want to spend much on it; sounds like a bit of a contradiction I admit but its possible. There is a fair amount for the FE but there is a cost associated with it. The selection is pretty good considering its been what 40 years almost since they last made one vs 10 years for the 302.
Yea that's one reason why finding nos or just any original parts for the 390s is hard....my theory is if you find a motor, don't nit pick at parts get the whole motor because they will one day be extinct lol. Like a heavy chunk of gold to you when people wanna buy them from you
