Well the whole reason I didn't want to swap axles is because I didn't want to sand blast and paint it but oh well I guess I'm ganna do it,yea this Bronco has some amazing parts but unfortunately it doesn't have the dual shock radius arms but I do plan on welding on the mounts in the front of them
Crazy and me are like Hans & Franz: "Hear us now and believe us later"
Sometimes what appears easiest to do really is not. Take the time to make it right... plus you've got a donor right there already. Heck, we had to claw and scrounge up our stuff! Both of us have done aspects of the swap and the rigs are waaaaay more enjoyable to drive.
You dont have do paint but its a nice touch. The second factory shock goes in front of the axle. It mounts to the radius arm cap. If your donor doesnt have this, they arent to hard to find at the j/y. Again, its just the cap and the upper bracket along with the shock of course. Its a fairly simple upgrade for now or later.
On the drivers side I believe the upper bracket is one with the track bar bracket but its been a few months since I last glanced at one.
Yea I have one cap my uncle gave me I just need one more,it is part of the Trac bar bracket....since I've been on this full restoration for 3 years now everything must be painted...I have not driven one of these old trucks yet but I hope this truck is like a dream compared to my 97 Cummins 12 valve cuz its taking a ton of work and especially $ and Im in highschool so it's hard to get $ at my age
Yup. Damn thing stops now to. As of recent unfortunately my focus has been elsewhere... Putting together a j/y built 302 for my boat and maintaining my freestar & fusion. It will still be there i suppose.
Learning a bunch of crap that will help in the rebuild of my 390... She burning more oil then gas and what isnt burnt gets hacked up all over the road; i live in a nice neighborhood and the snotty neighbors arent lovin her. Fūck'em.
You will love it. She's got your blood and sweat in her; its like a kid. Take it easy and first and be patient as she will need some breaking in and adjustment. My disc conversion alone had me tweaking the brake plunger for weeks not to mention the m/c bleed. Still have to do better by the m/c brake lines.
I had my 390 rebuilt by a shop,$2200 out the door and I had to put it together, upgraded my cam to hydraulic cam,all new pistons n rings, heads completely rebuilt, bored .40....if its an FE motor, plan on spending an *** load of $ that's what I've learned

Well, at least you're still in the automotive mode... two of my tenants moved out. One house got rented out quick... the other house has mucho deferred maintenance so I'm all tied up doing a makeover to get it out of the 60s and 70s and bring it up to date..... Oh how I long to have greasy fingernails again instead of drywall dust and paint spatter.
I was given a donor motor that had decent heads on it....are your heads good? If so get it bored and honed then but pistons rings and whatever cam you want and some lifters and do as much as you can yourself...the heads are what makes them expensive, just curious but does your 390 have adjustable rocker arms? Mine had it when I got it and the motor looked to be internally stock, not sure if they are aftermarket
@ Silver - Yeah I still get greasy. Just feeling guilty. Maybe its 'dent-withdrawal' or something.
@ Jerry - I think the heads are good; gonna get them decked for the hell of it. I will put fresh seals on the valves as well. I have an odd tick on the #1 side when it gets a little low on oil in addition to the excessive valve rattle that sounds like a diesel. Gonna have to see if I can figure that out.
The way its smoking from the #1 side, I think its got some bad piston rings in at least one cylinder. That's the main issue; second to this is the oil leaking everywhere... new gaskets should fix her up but I figure since it'll be apart the cam & intake should be upgraded.
I don't know if the rockets are adjustable or not; its been a over a year since I changed the valve cover gaskets and I didn't look.
Even if the cam is worth keeping get new bearings and the seals for the main caps on the crank, they are a pain in the *** to put in but will be worth it,you don't want a main seal goin out when that motor gets put back in...
If you can find them slap some 428 heads on there and that think should scream
Yeah shes a grouchy old girl but you hit that accelerator and the mf'er freaking goes. Off road or freeway; it doesn't matter. She is one sick puppy. It will put you in your seat if you punch it at 80 but I never had enough nerve to go much past 90; gotta clean out the cob webs occasionally. She doesn't quit.
I scared the hell out of one of my buddy's who had never really done much offroading... Took his *** up the side of a steep *** levee that was all loose and rutted in 2wd. She made a mess of things but made me proud. He is now looking for a dent of his own.
Point being I am happy with what I have. Besides some mild upgrades, she is staying the same. Just freshened up.

Oh yeah... All that. To be honest the only thing confusing me with this FE rebuild is the tensioning of the lifters/rods/rockets or whatever its called. I am sure its pretty straight forward but I have only seen the Windsor engines done where you just kinda eye it in or torque it to a specific amount.
The break in sounds like a bit of a PITA also. Once its all done right though...
