Sythetic Engine Oil

I'm thinking of switching to a synthetic engine oil for the next scheduled oil change of our '09 F-250 SD 5.4.

It will be towing 75-80% of it's yearly mileage and I want to protect the engine as best I can against the additional wear and tear towing our 8500 lb. fifth wheel will be exacting onto the little V8.

I've never used synthetic engine oil and wanted some experienced opinions as to what brand synthetic oil is best to use along with what intervals to change oil and filter to optimize the life of the engine.

Thanks ahead of time for any and all information.

Pick a major brand and you will be fine. I like Pennzoil and have seen good analysis results from the Pennzoil Ultra in a 5.4 3 valve. I am not too big on extended oil changes so I use conventional and go 5k. If you really want to extend the intervals I would spend the money for the analysis. If not stay within the range specified in your owners manual and you should be good as gold.

Use motorcraft semi syn and stick with 5K miles and you will be fine and not paying through the nose for full synthetic. In fact I don't think it is possible to find a 5w20 that isn't at least semi synthetic so you've been using it all along to an extent.

I just changed from Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20 to Mobil-1 5w-30 at 50k miles on my 2010 F250 with 5.4L. We also tow an 8500~lb 5th wheel in the southern heat. So far at 52000 miles, it's doing fine. I'll continue to change it at 5k mile intervals. Don't know that I need synthetic but it makes me sleep better. The 5w-30 seems to have made the engine a little quieter or less tinny sounding in the drive through next to the wall. Could be placebo.

I have a 2006 F-150 with the 5.4. I have put nothing but full synthetic castrol since I bought it new. I have 142,000 miles on it and it run fine except now I have the famous ticking sound and the engine is louder. Not sure if it's an exhaust manifold leak.
