So, while driving today I stepped on it and banged second to get out in front of traffic and felt nothing but clutch slipping. I know the clutch is old, truck has over 180,000 and I dont know when it was last changed. my question is, does anyone know if the disks are the same from a 1980 f150 custom 302 3 on the tree to my 93 f150xl 300 5 speed? I know ford tried to keep alot of things the same, and Im not betting they are the same disks, but hoping they are. (if that makes sense). I just put a new clutch in the old ford a few months back but havent driven it, and with me not working Im hoping I can swap them out so I can get around. any help is appreciated, Im just not sure if they are the same clutch disks
I am pretty sure they are not the same part. The five speeds that Ford started using in truck in 1988 had a different spline pattern than the earlier four speeds. I find it odd that a 1980 3-speed transmission shares the same spline pattern as an M5OD.
But I could be wrong. I would make sure I could return the part before I bought it.
ive already bought it and installed it in the 80. thats why i didnt want to buy another one. advance auto and napa both list the disks as the same part number.
Just for reference, the small block ZF I swapped into my truck mated with the factory clutch that went with the original 4-speed (10 spline input shaft I think).
That's odd because I've always seen two clutch kit parts listed. One for four speeds and the other for five speeds. I always assumed that the input shaft was different.
