Ok so today I jacked up the rear end of the truck and put it in neutral there was alot of play in the driveshaft. I could tell it wasn't from the universal joint so what is it?

When jacked up and you turn the driveshaft back and forth, watch the rear tires. If they move right away with the shaft, it's not the rear. If it takes some turning of the shaft before the tires start to turn, it will be loose rear gears.

Now you said you didn't know if I was limited slip or not. Then you said you changed the gear oil 8 mos ago. LS rear ends take different fluid and additives than open diffs. If you put the wrong oil in them it will frag clutches and ruin your rearend.

There should be a little slack in he diff, but, not a lot.You could have slip or stub yoke going bad too.

They didn't turn right away. It took a bit to turn the wheels. So that means the gears are bad?

Bruno 2 I am sorry I was thinking on another truck we replaced the rear end fluid in.

Ok so me and my dad are looking at prices for gears and pinion shafts and they are pretty high. At the price I can go to the local junkyard (which I am buddies with) and get a rear end for our truck cheaper and not play guessy loo with what part is bad. Is there anything I should look for when looking for a rear end? Does it have to be from and F150? I still want the limited slip. Thanks in advance guys.

If you are looking for a duplicate, check the F-150s. Anything bigger will have a diff axle. Check for play like you did with yours. whatever your gear ratio, the tag will have 3L08 or 3L55 or what ever the gears are. The L is for limited slip. Also when you turn one axle, the other turns the same direction, not opposite like with an open.

It is a 3.55 limited slip rear end. I think the junkyard has one. What is the year range to look for? I know there is a limited slip rear end in a 92-96 F150. Also will a bronco rear end work I know there is a bronco 86 with limited slip there.

I would just look into doing the bearings in the rear end. The way they are set up when the bearings wear they come out of tolerance. New bearings and maybe a shim or two will put it back into where it needs to be.
