Ive got an 84 f150 w/ 351W HO in it. its a fresh motor that my dad and i just put together. for some reason i keep having trouble w/ the water pump leaking out the bottom. its been apart like 4 times now all the gaskets replaced the waterpump was changed again too. everthing is getting cleaned up good... the part that confuses me is the fact that when i take it apart change gaskets and put it all together it wont leak untill i drive it several times. last time i drove it over 70miles before i had an issue, this time only about 20 and its dripping again now. the timing cover is off the old motor but i nvr had a problem on that one... any ideas or anybody else run into this? Thanks
Are you putting a little bit of silcone on the bolts? Some of them go into the water passages. Are you using silcone on all the gaskets? The timing cover is aluminum and is famous for pitting in certain areas from corrosion.
A small leak like this is hard to find sometimes. I know you said it's the waterpump, but are you positive?
i have not siliconed the bolts but i didnt when i changed it on the other motor. its the same cover just different block. it didnt leak on that motor. i did silicon the gaskets the last time and it held till it decided to start pooring outta the bottom of the pump. which was caused by the shim plate bolts loosening up on the new water pump. that was fixed and new gaskets installed, now its back to a drip. yes im sure its coming out of the water pump, it drips out of the small little gap in the cover, on the bottom like dead center, in the ridge for the water pump. im lacking the proper name right now which would lead me to believe its leaking on the inner side of the inlet or outlet.
If it is leaking in the center, bottom, the only place it would be is between the pump and pump cover.
Take the pump cover off (4 bolts) and run a sealant on both sides of that gasket too (I prefer Permatex Ultra Blue). Wipe all gasket surfaces off really good with lacquer thinner. Also clean and use sealant around the pump to timing cover passages.
I've seen the pump to plate gaskets leak, but some parts stores will give you a hard time because you had the rear cover off. I had to threaten a guy for a warranty one time because I had used sealer on that gasket. He claimed I had it apart which voided the warranty. Big deal, it's a water gasket and needs to be sealed correctly.
I did get the ultra blue silicon last time. That seemed to work great till the bolts in the shim plate loosened up and it started pouring out on the ground that time it was a brand new pump so I think I'm just gonna get it warranted again check the bolts this time and put some more ultra blue on it. It seem too be fine w/ the pump till the bolts came loose... It's always the replacement gaskets when I have a problem
