Got a 97 Powerstroke van. I'm pretty new to diesel. Still learning how it all works. Gonna show my newbie colors.
Would a stuck open thermostat cause the engine to run rough when it's cold. I'm preheating for about 30 minutes and upon take off, there's a massive "woosh" sound, no power, it's just sluggish. Once it FINALLY warms up, it's good to go.
When I started it this morning, I noticed the engine cool gauge barely moved above cold and it had been running about an hour. I'm thinking possibly a stuck injector? Maybe "just" the thermostat? Anyone else experience this?
It helps the motor heat up. Its a big butterfly valve on the turbo.
You probably could use a thermostat to help get everything running right, if the motor isn't warming up very quick even with the EBPV going, then you got a bad T-stat.
The low power is probably from the EBPV being stuck closed or not operating right.
The dash gauge is very very inaccurate though. Mine bearly goes into normal at 150 degrees.
You can disconnect the power supply to the EBPV, and your power will pick up and the whooshing will go away. It is a two prong plug on the drivers side about 2/3 of the way back from the front of the engine, just to the inside or top side of the drivers side valve cover. Just unplug it and leave it hang. This will store a code in your computer, but will not activate your check engine light. I disconnected mine a few years ago, with no problems. Hope this helps...Thanks...Kevin
