05 Aviator subwoofer access

I'm not sure if there's a previous article. A couple months ago I removed the subwoofer from my Aviator to inspect it, it wasn't a quick task. The third row seat has to come out, the passenger rear seat needs to be folded forward, lower passenger rear seat belt bolt comes out, then trim to allow access to the rear interior trim panel gets removed to allow the large interior trim to come out.
Once you get the trim piece out of the way (which includes the subwoofer grill) you can unbolt the subwoofer assembly (driver, amp, and plastic enclosure). There is a screw from the backside of the enclosure that attaches to the subwoofer motor structure so you need to remove the enclosure assembly to remove the driver.
[edit] Here's a photo I took while starting to put everything back together. FWIW, I took mine apart to confirm the amp was working. The bass in my Aviator is not as impressive as what it was in my 2004 Mountaineer. The amp is working fine, it must just be due to all the added sound deadening material in the Aviator?

Oh my freaking Lord!!! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. Now that looks like a project!!.. Maybe you can answer this.. My daughter says it sounds like her speaker is blown. Is the speaker replaceable with another speaker...or is this all one unit? P.S. thank you so much for this info!!.. wish it wasnt winter...this looks like a nice summer job!!

The subwoofer is replaceable, but it is a dual voice coil unit (8" if I remember correctly) but rather shallow. There have been other posts about people sourcing aftermarket units (I think JL Audio was a popular choice) but I don't recall the specifics. You'd want to make sure to plug the hole in the rear if you were to go with an aftermarket driver.
You might want to experience what she's referring to first hand before tearing in to this project. Maybe the sound is just due to a rattle somewhere.
