Mirror replacement.

I am looking at replacing my current stock mirrors with some made for towing. I did some research here earlier and found a posting where another guy was planning on getting these: 2005 - 2011 Ford F150 Truck Ford F150 Truck Mirror Pair Power Heated Puddle Light SIGNAL Towing UPGRADE at 1AAuto.com

My current mirrors are powered, but I don't have the built-in turn signal, nor are they heated and don't have the puddle light. Those are all nice to have and I would really like to have those options, but I don't know if I can use them. Is my truck wired for those options? If not, then I'm wasting my money purchasing something with extra's that I can't use. If I can't use these, would anyone have any suggestions for replacement towing mirrors that at the minimum are powered and manual telescoping?

BTW, I have a 2008 F150.

Thanks.

Daryl

I took a look over here for you, and I don't have a set of tow mirrors with just power.

We do carry these manual tow mirrors though 2005 - 2011 Ford F150 Truck Ford F150 Truck Mirror Manual Towing UPGRADE Pair at 1AAuto.com

I am no ford expert. I have put 2011 mirrors on a 2005. First thing I would do is check your plug. If the plug only has a black red and white you won't have the ability to hook up the turn signals plug and play. You can still manually wire them up and splice them into your turn signal wires. Same goes with your puddle laps and heaters. If there isn't matching wires on the plugs you can wire it yourself. I wouldn't suggest it.

A little heads up: I have noticed ford puts in all of the wiring harnesses in all of the trucks. If your truck didn't come with that option you didn't get the button.

Example: heated mirrors, behind your dash would be the plug going to the button. No button or place for it to go but all the wires going to the mirror.

My truck has the wiring for a traction control button, but no button. I always wanted to hook it up so I can turn it off.

Hope that made sense...

If memory serves me correctly, the wiring is there for everything from 07 and newer. If you don't have the rear defrost button on the dash for rear defrost, you won't have the relay and fuse for it either and the heated mirror option won't work because it is powered by the rear defrost circuit. Again, if memory is correct there is a part number to remedy that. I think it consisted of a new fuse block and was rather costly. There have been a few postings on this on this site. You might try a search for specifics. The puddle lamps should be wired with your truck (07 and newer). My 06 isn't wired for puddle lamps so they don't work on my tow mirrors. But I did have rear defrost and the heated mirror option does work on mine. But my buddy still rags on me for not hooking up the puddle lamps.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the replies. My suspicion is/was that the truck is probably prewired, but as it has been mentioned, certain buttons, fuses and relay's might not be installed. Looks like I'll have to do some more research before purchasing these mirrors.

Also, Tony, I appreciate you checking your inventory for power only tow mirrors.

No problem bud, I don't mind helping you guys out.

When we sell our mirrors we try to match up all of the options for you so that we know the plug ends will match and you can just bolt them right in and be done with the job.

I finally had a chance to look at the dash panel of my truck (I don't get the chance to drive it everyday ). I noticed on the panel, directly below the fan, temperature and vent selector ***** a blank plug. To the left of that blank plug is the AC button, to the right is the outside vent shutoff button.

My guess is that this blank plug can be replaced with a block of buttons that might include a button for the heated mirrors and puddle light. And, my bet would be that the wiring for those buttons is directly behind that plug. Am I correct?

If I am correct, would anyone know where I could get the block of buttons?

Thanks.

Yes the wiring would be directly behind those. Just pop the radio bezel off and you will probably find them tucked inside.

I have just recently replaced my mirrors with a set off a 2012. The new ones were powerfold, power, heated, turn signals, and the puddle lamp.

My old ones didn't have the puddle lamp or the power fold. Surprisingly, the puddle lamp was already wired and works great. The power fold was not wired however, so I need to work on that.

JoSHN,

Did you already have the dash button for the puddle light? If not, where did you purchase it?

The dash button does not power the puddle lamp. It is powered by the same source that controls the delay feature of the lights and the dome light circuit. The dash button is for the heated mirror and rear defrost option. That circuit runs thru the fuse block and the harness which splits off to the mirror harness. If your fuse block does not have provisions for the fuse and relay for the rear defrost you'll need to replace the fuse block.

Maybe I miss understood how the puddle light worked. Is it always lit, or is there a button/switch that will turn it on? I guess I assumed that a person would turn it on when needed, is that not correct?

Thanks.

No, the puddle light will come on when the interior lights are illuminated, and fade with them when they shut off as well.

The puddle light works off of the dome light circuit. The only time it's on all the time is when you turn on the dome lights with the switch to stay on. Otherwise, the puddle lights work when the dome light works. Your truck should be wired for the puddlle lights. It should be a plug and play for your truck. The heated mirror function is what works off the rear defrost circuit. If you get the mirrors that have the heated feature and your truck doesn't have rear defrost, that feature won't work. The mirrors will function ok other than the heated option. There were several threads on this subject about 4-1/2 years ago when I bought my 06 that spelled out what was needed to get the heated mirror feature to work. The switch in the instrument panel under the radio and fuse block and relay were mentioned with the part numbers. I just don't recall what the part numbers are right now. You may try a search on this site and it'll tell what's needed for heated mirrors.

I don't have the rear defrost option on my truck, but i have the heated mirrors. Would my truck then be prewired for the rear defrost?
