Just calculated my MPG and its 5.89 on a mix of premium and mid grade. I fill the tank one day with premium then when it gets to half a tank i get mid grade then next half tank i get premium again. Figure get a little higher octane going cuz it runs like crap on regular.
Anyway, i really cant keep going with this mpg if i can help it. I just got new dual exhaust with a X pipe. Its 2.5" into the X and into the mufflers then a short run of 3" out before the rear wheels.
What can i do to get better MPG with what i have. I have a 1974 F250 4X4 390, mild cam (mild lope to it), Holley double pumper 4BBL carb, D60 with 4.09 rear, and D44 front (discs), 35" tires.
I know, not the ideal set up for MPG right? lol Anyway i really like my carb and i was told that my exaust smells a little rich so i should have the truck jetted and dynoed and was told due to that i should get better MPG. Is there anything else i can do like better spark plugs, better distributer (im thinking MSD), etc?
Well, fall out of love with that carb and go with vacuum secondaries. Plus, your area has alot of hills and dales so that doesn't help matter with a heavy rig, a generally inefficient engine, and four carb jets pumping fuel all the time.

*sigh* yea probably.... have a NIB edelbrock carb in the garage. Leme see what model it is and maybe it will fit.
[quote=devino246;12477630]Swap in that edelbrock. That double pumper is pumping money right out of your wallet.
I hope you aren't expecting anything better than about 8 city. A 390 4x4 with 35's is never going to get good mileage.
I'd comment on your using premium fuel in your truck, but that's only going to lead to useless, uninformed debate.
Haha yea im trying to get away from premium cuz i hear it makes no more difference then midgrade yet it drains the wallet faster. And if i was to get a carb with an autochoke, which edelbrock would i go for?
Oh, in response to your question about an MSD system - very little gain unless your rig regularly sees more than 5,000 RPM. Again, save your money.
Hm alright. Thanks HIO! My mechanic friend is going to pick me one up that is no where near as expensive so yea id rather save the money if it aint going to do anything.

And yea id like to get 10mpg out of it :/
Only reason that premium could be making a difference is because premium sometimes contains less ethanol than mid grade. I'd try 87 octane with ethanol fuel stabilizer.

I'm not an Edelbrock guy...
Is that 10 city, highway, or combined?
Whats fuel stabilizer? And um like 8 combined 10 highway at least.
