I would not say permanently, but it is currently set to auto and I don't plan on changing it anytime soon. If I wanted to change it, I'd have to remove my center cap...which equate to pulling the front wheels. Not very convenient. Every time I rotate the wheels, I engage and disengage the hubs to make sure all is well.
I personally would never cover the hubs. IMO the vac line that connects to the hubs has some fairly chinsey plastic connectors in it, a sage brush or something could easily break it off. or even running in some tall grass I think could do it. it aint that heavy duty. and like I said if the weather is bad and I am on dirt roads shifting in and our of 4wd quite a bit I am just going to go manual lock.
