Being a fellow Mainer.... yup, IMHO manual hubs would suck... but it's a personal preference.
Where you located, and what engine do you have?
Welcome to the FTE!
Are the hubs on the front wheels black plastic or silver metal?
5.4 triton, im in portland.. Also my read wheels have silver and the ford but theyre black on my two front wheels..
If they are the black plastic ones, they are most likely the ford OEM ones. You need to look at them closely (the paint is most likely gone) and figure out whether they are in "Lock" or "Auto" If you have the switch in the dash "auto" is your best bet, assuming you don't have any vacume leaks.
The fronts are marked "auto" and "locked" keep them on auto and use locked when the system fails. Make sure the 4x4 works before you need it! In the auto setting all you need to do is flip the dash switch.
I plow in Maine with mine and my auto feature stopped working, so in the winter i usually leave my hubs locked in gas mileage drops but it is much easier than getting out every time. Also Ford recommends manually locking them if in 4 low or mud running, etc. I would spray the hub wear it turns with WD-40 as the plastic tends to stick and then turn them a few times back and forth to lube them up.
Im almost always in 4x4 high, i will not take this truck mudding so hopefully my auto still works!
Quickest/easiest way to test is in an open parking lot (or wide driveway) put it in 4x4 and turn te wheel each way all the way... you should feel the "bind" and hop from the 4x4 being engaged.
Or just put it in 4x4, hit the e-brake, and jack up the front end and make sure it's engaged!
Locking hubs = awesome, your guy at work needs beaten with a clue stick.
You can have manual(locked-unlocked) or auto(locked-auto) hubs. The auto hubs used engine vacuum to lock the wheels when you use the 4wd selector switch to get to 4high or 4 low.
If you have a switch in the cab, then they are auto hubs, unless they have been replaced.
This last winter I had mine in auto and they both worked fine(after I fixed a vacuum leak). I would test to make sure they still work. Worst case just leave them manually locked when you expect to use 4x4
