Turbo failure in Sioux Falls SD

Hey guys, I pulled a trailer to Sioux Falls and lost a turbo seal towards the end of the trip. Got oil blowing through the exhaust and smoking like crazy.

Anyone know of a place here in Sioux Falls that would have a turbo? Kinda stranded 700 miles from home but I have all the tools with me to swap the thing out. I can order one and hopefully have it overnighted if needed. Where is the best place to get it if I have to do that?

Call Home Run Auto in Sioux Falls and see if he has one. 605-334-2008. He may know of someone who has one if he doesn't. He parts out 7.3's. Ron's turbo would probably overnight one to you if needed.

I'm only 100 miles west of you now. I'll be gone till noon or so today to Pierre, but if you need anything, give me a call and I'll try to help if I can. My number is 605-seven seven zero, 1901.

Thanks a bunch for the info and offer Darin! I will call them this morning. If that doesn't pan out do you think Beans diesel can overnight a d66? If I have to order one, might as well spend a little more for an upgrade, that is if they can overnight it....

I don't know if they would or not. I guess you can call them and find out if you don't find one.

I'm heading out, but if you need anything Chris, let me know and I'll do what I can.

Hey Darin, I wasn't able to find one in stock anywhere. That home run auto had a used one for 500 without exchange, but I didn't want to risk that. I ended up ordering one from Dakota Diesel and its a new one for 790 no exchange. I was really surprised at the price. Its suppose to be here round 9am tomorrow.

Gonna take the old one off today and hopefully get the new one on pretty easily (fingers crossed). Might give you a call here a little later with some questions.

Well the turbo is out, found a chalky film of aluminum in the plentums. Hope no chunks got in. I attached some pics showing the carnage. The wheel and housing is chewed up. Truck seemed to run fine tho.

The oil seal was in the oil tube of the pedestal, glad it didn't fall through to the block. Also the thrust bearing is almost gone on the inside surface. Don't know what caused that to happen.

What do you guys think about damage to the motor that could have been caused?

Glad you got it out Chris. I hope you didn't do any other engine damage, but if you didn't run it long like you told me, I'm thinking you'll be ok. We'll see if anyone else has an opinion.

You probably know this already, change that oil before you leave. It would be good imo to change it twice if you can. I'd run some cheap oil in it and get it warm/hot and drop it right away and put some good in it and go.

Good luck Chris, and you can call me anytime if you need anything.

If you had the plenums off i think checking for debris and cleaning them out would probably be good peace of mind.but if big chunkssis of parts are already inside....it may be the damage is done, just hope for the best.
bad situation either way...sorry!

Thanks Darin. I changed the oil and didn't see any pieces of my turbo in it. The oil return for the turbo goes directly to the pan right? I didn't see anything in the filter when I drained it either.

I pick up the turbo in the morning and hopefully start the trip home in the evening if all goes well. I'll be pulling a loaded trailer back, so it will be trial by fire. Thanks guys.

That plenum looked clean but that doesn't mean much. Drain to the pan and you changed it, I would bet you'll be OK. Let us know and good luck. Need a map? LOL

Thanks Mike. Lol Glenn! with all this recent cold weather, snow, and wind, I might need a map for a trip down south for the winter. By the way, glad you and the truck made it home safe and sound.

The plenums do "look" clean but they are covered in a thin film of aluminum dust. It feels and looks almost like nickel anti-seize was sprayed inside.

Boy, that's interesting. Hopefully that fine of 'dust' will not hurt anything.

After another slip code north of Vegas I give Lucas credit for getting me home, thanks.

From Sioux Falls just get on I29 south then to........LOL

If you're able to change that oil a second time after you get it running, that would get more of that crap out of the motor.

I assume you're coming west on I90 towards wyoming? Like I said, I'm only 100 miles west, so if you are having any problems with the install or trip after you get going, call.
