Thank you all for such great info., I'm starting a restore and I'm already confused. I thought I had a 1/2 ton pickup, then I found the vin# 7GY ..... From what I have read the Y = 1ton. And I'm good with that, but this rear end
Has me confused...... In all the pics I have seen and manuals they all talk about a bolted on hub, this one is a pointed spindle type hub? Is this the proper rear end for a 47 1 ton? Is there a easy to know what the gear ratio is? Thanks for the help.
Pic update. I'm still confused on what type of truck this is. These pic were taken 8 years ago, the bed is no longer with the truck, but it looks like the bed is only a 6' bed and i thought all the 1 ton trucks had 8' bed? And the rims on this truck are not split rims and really don't look like beefy 1 ton rims, the rears are running 6.5 x 16 rubber? So do I really have a 1 ton truck?
The pix look half ton. The number you give is a one ton. Where are you getting the number from? If its from the transmission is very possible the trans was swapped at some point. Let's do this the easy way, measure the wheelbase, if its 114 inches, you have a half ton, if its 122 inches you have a one ton.
Gary the number's I'm getting are on the frame above the steering box, I currently have the frame stripped down to the bare bones, also on the frame I only have two cross members in the rear of the truck and I believe I've seen pic's of three on a 1/2 ton....I'm going to look at the metal plate in the glove box again tonight, but I'm almost sure it says 4700.........wheels are 5 lugs not 8....I'm just really confused what I have.........I believe your right I need to break out the tape measure........
The 4700 is consistent with 1/2 ton. There is another possibility, and the is to remember that these numbers were hand stamped by humans. I have seen where the number was stamped wrong, so perhaps rather that stamping with the C stamped, the guy used the Y stamp. It's rare, but it has occurred.
And the one tons back then used 5 lugs, not 8, so that is not a good way to visually differentiate between the two
Usually they would restamp the serial number if they realized it was wrong. For instance, my '46 has a partial serial number stamped but they did it wrong so they restarted. Because the Y being backwards is not such a big issue, perhaps they let it slide.
The tailgate is different than the 1/2 ton version, taller and wider since the 1 ton had a deeper bed. If it is in good shape it has some value to somebody who is working on a 1 ton. The 'gates are hard to find in good shape, and the one ton 'gate is not reproduced.
My '46 1/2 ton also has a "Y" in the VIN. Measured it out at 114". The VIN was a new thing in those days and I guess they weren't standardized very well. My numbers matched frame and transmission, so I guess its all original.
I took Gary's advice and ran the tape, it came out at 114" so I guess it's a 1/2 ton with the Y in the number on the frame and tranny. Thanks everybody for all the information....
Thanks again for all the help trying to figure out what I have here, tossing a Y into the stamped number sure can mess up a guys thinking! LOL So you ask my intentions…………….well I have a 14 year daughter that loves trucks, one day while sitting in the shop talking about when (after 8 years) I was going to start on the Ford Truck project, my daughter informed me that in two years she will be driving and that this truck could fit that bill. I said why not, so my goal is to get the flathead six up and running in the next couple of years. We just finished blasting and painting the frame, and are starting to build it back up, there will be some body work to do on the fenders, and the floor will need to be replaced along with the upholstery. Piece by piece we should have a nice truck for my daughter to have during her school years.
Front1/4 if you have a 1 ton tailgate and want to sell it let me know. I am in need of a good 1 ton tail gate.
Thats great that you are going to fix it up for your daughter. I brought my 47 home before we had any kids. I havent been able to work on it yet (been getting some parts though) but I would definatly like to be able to have my daughter drive it to prom (I have about 13 years...hopefully thats enough time )
