It depends. If you had factory, and I think dealer, A/C, then you have a vacuum operated HVAC controller. Just heaters only use cables, one for the blend door and another for the diverter door that routes the air.
I'm guessing your truck is a no A/C model, as from what I've heard, the models with A/C will spring back to defrost if something is wrong.
In which case, you'll need to get a new cable to go to the diverter door.
