i put my cam shaft in my 400 around 3 weeks ago. I used the red colored assembly grease. well any way i was going to put the lifters in today when i noticed a rust color on the lobes.
hmm. a dilema here my autoshop teacher and my dad told me to just run it. and others say i shouldnt who should i trust? if i just run it and change the oil after the 20 minute break in will i have any problems?
Believe it or not there is often rust on one or more cylinders walls and the cam lobes when an engine sits unused, but we just don't see it. It is very minimal and the particles or very small and soft. The metal debris a new engine circulates during break in are much larger and harder than the rust particles that are on the cam and rust is most likely on the cylinder walls. If you are worried about the rust on the cam then you better pull the heads too because there may be rust on the cylinder walls as well.
The cam lobes are oiled by the oil being thrown on them from the crankshaft. This oil is unfiltered and will always have debri in it. A small amount of surface rust isn't going to ruin a cam no more than rubbing a little rust of it will hurt it.
