Hey guys, I've been away from the forum for quite a while. But I'm looking at the F-150 Supercrew trucks. Will probably search for 2001-2003 4x4 models only with 5.4L engine. I read through the FAQ already. Can you guys give me some tips about these trucks? Are there any model years that have significant problems? Anything to watch out for? Any features to make sure I get? Honestly, I really don't know a whole lot about these model years of the F-150. Any advice would be helpful before I start shopping.
I just went through the same process and ended up buying a 2003 Supercrew Lariat FX4.
I have some experience with the 2001 5.4L engine, and while it is a very reliable motor, there are issues with the head design and the lack of threads holding the spark plugs in. They do blow out, in some cases, and it can be a pain in the *** to repair, or expensive if you have a shop do it. There are also issues with rumbling or rough shifts, which has to do with the torque converters in 2001.
I personally like the body design of the 1997-2003 trucks so I decided to go with the last year of that design run. I figured most of the "kinks" would have been TSB'd by then, and the chances of finding a low mileage (<100,000 miles) truck would be better.
There were hundreds of thousands of these trucks made. It's not as if being a rare vehicle. The oem as well as aftermarket has a large volume of vehicles to supply parts for so I can't see a short in supply.
