TPMS sensor problem....

I have a 2013 Ford and I just put a set of wheels on it from a 2009 Ford with the band sensors. The wheels I removed had the sensors at the end of the valve stems. Can I train the band sensors from the 2009 wheels to work on my 2013 Ford? I have received conflicting information on this. If not do I need to remove the band sensors and install the valve stem sensors from my 2013 wheels? Thanks....

It's too late because I had the tires put on the rims today and the guy left the band style ones in there. My question is: Will the old band style sensors from 2009 work on a 2013 model?

I just ran across this on another forum....

"All 2008-2009 Fords have the band-style sensors, and all 2010-2013 Fords have valve stem-style sensors. I was told that the sensors are incompatible, but I know for a fact that both transmit at the same frequency (315 MHz), so you MAY be able to train 08-09 sensors to a 10-13."

If I go back to the tire place and have them dismount my tires to replace the sensors they're not going to do it for free. Is there any way I can do it at home in my garage? Can I get the tire loose from the rim with a tire iron or a big screwdriver?

It's $46.56 at Amazon, $39.99 at Champion Mustang, and the cheapest one on Ebay is $38 so where can I get one for under $20? Can the 2009 band style sensors be retrained for a 2013 model? Thanks...

I just called my friendly local Ford dealer and gave him the part number because he wasn't familiar with this tool and it was $53 and he would have to order it. Please let me know where I can get one for under $20 and I would still like to know if the 2009 sensors are compatible with the 2013 model Fords. Thanks again....

Could be wrong here but I believe the tire shop put the valve stem kind on my aftermarket rims on my 09. If that's the case then you'd think the band kind would work on a later one.

I've been doing some research and I was told that the 2009 band type sensors cannot be programmed to a 2013's computer. Is that correct? Do I need to remove the TPMS sensors from the valve stems of my old wheels and put them on the new wheels? I was also told that I need to replace the valve stems since they'll get damaged when they are removed from the old wheels. I called the Ford dealer and they don't sell the valve stems separately. They sell the valve stem with the TPMS sensor attached for $113 each. Then I would still have to buy the programming tool and pay someone with a tire machine to put them in for me. Does anyone know where I can buy the valve stems separately so I can reuse my sensors? Thanks in advance....

I'm not going to try to break the bead myself-I'm going to take it back to the tire shop. Can you please answer my other questions from my post of a few minutes ago? Thanks....

YES!

Do I need to remove the TPMS sensors from the valve stems of my old wheels and put them on the new wheels?
The "valve stem" portion of the TPMS slides through the valve stem hole in the rim and is attached to the "transmitter" portion via a screw.

I was also told that I need to replace the valve stems since they'll get damaged when they are removed from the old wheels.
Not true.

I called the Ford dealer and they don't sell the valve stems separately. They sell the valve stem with the TPMS sensor attached for $113 each.
T'is true. Though can be had for MUCH less $$$$$.

Then I would still have to buy the programming tool and pay someone with a tire machine to put them in for me. Does anyone know where I can buy the valve stems separately so I can reuse my sensors? Thanks in advance....
  • A "reset" tool is NOT necessary. Read the procedure in your owner's manual.
  • The "valve stems" are not available separately.
-IF- you're planning to keep both sets of wheels, would recommed purchasing and installing new TPMS in your 2009 wheels ... otherwide remove the TPMS from the 2013 wheels and install them in your 2009's (ANY shop should be able to do this without damaging the TPMS).

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Someone else told me to take all 4 sensors and put them in the spare tire and the light will go out. Will that work? That sounds like the easiest solution to me. Thanks again....

Since the TPMS are "trained" by position .... I doubt that would work. AND, even if it did - How would you secure them to the rim? Remember they're not banded (though could be I guess).

The EXTREME that I've heard of others taking is to make an encased tube (made from HD PVC) with a schrader valve, install the TPMS, and pressurize the tube. Seems like a lot of effort to bypass a good safety fearure.
