99 Expedition, 130k miles 5.4 awd without air suspension.
Honestly, when I bought this truck I was really looking for a range rover (99-02).
It turns out all range rovers from that era are over priced and in rough shape and repairs costs are ridiculous for almost everything.
One of the big things about the range rover was the ride quality, both with stock air suspension and aftermarket coil replacements it was amazing. If you hit train tracks for instance you can barely tell, where as with my Expy it feels like it's going to fall apart or rattle apart over major bumps/tracks.
I know I won't get Rover like ride quality out of this thing, but what shocks am I looking for to get me as close as possible? I don't really care about handling or anything other than superior ride quality. Thanks!
After a bit of input on the other Expedition forum I visit, I decided that any shock was going to be better than my originals with 130k and no one stood out as providing considerably better ride quality than another. So I narrowed it down to the KYB Monomax and the Bilstein HD. I chose the Bilstein HD for about $30 more shipped. Hope these work okay for me.
At 130k, you are probably in need of some new suspension parts. If you can swing it, ditch the rear air suspension and replace with standard coils. I've read enough complaints on this forum about leaky air bags and saggy rear suspensions that has made me happy my truck never came with it. Moving on, I would suspect you need ball joints (mine made it to 130k before I had them all replaced) and new front shocks. I had a local truck repair shop go through my entire suspension and they replaced my front shocks with F-350 units. Not sure of the brand, but when I hit my first bump I was kinda in disbelief. My truck never rattled or bounced around; I originally took it in for an alignment problem and $1500 later, I had a really nice driving vehicle. Had some other things addressed for the amount paid, but having new Moog ball joints and front shocks was night-and-day difference.
My 2000 Expedition hasd the airsuspension i did the spring and coil over from strutmaster it went good for a DYI project. I later had my idler arm and lower ball joints replaced and now my ride is great. But well worth it. As for Shock I will be switchin to bilsten when these wear out.. My son's 99 F150 4x4 has bilsten hd and the ride is good and very stable and my wife tundra came with bilsten and is a rock solid ride in control all the time.
