I have a 1991 F-150 with the 5.0, and for the whole truck being stock, it doesn't run quarter miles very bad for being a full size truck, just wondering your guys opinion on some upgrades on the truck. Mostly want to put my money into the motor, but open to suggestions. My budget is around 500 bucks, surely I can help performance with this amount of money. Not really going for gas mileage, just want a little more horsepower out of it. Any ideas would help, as well as some good websites.
Thanks!
I would say for that amount you can get a set of headers. If money is not a factor and you could spend whatever you wanted I would say Headers to start, electric fan, cam, gt40 heads and I believe intake as well. These are what I have been told when I asked around and from reading others
My very first dollars spent would on a decent 4 core aluminum radiator. Repeat, first. Heat is the first byproduct of more horsepower no matter how you make it. Shorty headers, cat back or full exhaust, under drive pullies, 1.7 rockers and a bigger throttle body are all easy external bolt-ons. From there you get serious like a E or B cam, heads, intake, rear diff gears etc.
Don't neglect your brakes and suspension to tame the extra ponies you are putting under the hood.
500 bucks and you could get you a new computer and a decent 351 thats a great up grade but it you want to keep the 302 hedders long tube cause shortys are well in my mind useless i would go with bigger tb and new injectors then cam then turn the puter
Bolt on a set of long tube headers, and redo your exhaust to something a little more free flowing. Whatever you have left, buy plugs, wires, cap and rotor and a hotter coil.
honestly save your money buy a 351 rebuild it make it as warm as you want then drop it in i have a 1978 f150 im doing the SAME thing with i have the doner frame motor and tranny but i aint puttin together till its done right why waste your money on a old motor? drive it while soupin up the other
The single best upgrade on a pre '94 5.0 motor is a cam change but it's a lot of work, next best upgrade is a full exhaust including headers, and last of all 1.7 rockers. Spending anything on any part of the intake system is a complete waste of money.. the stock parts will support over 300hp easily. After that motor work the next best bang for our buck is gears, the ideal ratio for this motor is 3.73 with stock 29-30" tires and then you go up from there with larger tires.
