i have a 87 f-150 with a new/rebuilt 5.0 everything is pretty much stock, other then my oil pan. i have an after market 7 QT sump that was on the truck when i bought it. i am wondering if the engine i replaced had a high volume pump on it and the new engine doesnt. ever since i put the new engine in the oil pressure falls to almost nothing and the engine starts to knock once i start to accelerate.
could this be because the oem oil pump cant reach the oil in the larger after market pan?
is this why when buying a high volume oil pump the manufacturer says "some minor altering to the oil pan may have to be done"?
...or do you think the main bearings were already bad in the rebuilt engine? i bought the engine from Rebuilt engines online from PowerSource and they "say" everything is new.
Did you compare the oil pump from the old motor to the new one? Are you putting 7 quarts in the motor? Is there a chance the oil is low or you have a gasket located incorrectly and oil is not draining to the pan quickly enough?
unfortunately i dont posses the space or the necessary tools to do an engine swap, so i had a professional mechanic do it, so i can only assume it was done correctly, but who knows.
i am certain that it is full of oil. i have changed the oil myself a few times since the new engine went in so i know the correct amount has went in.
a backwards gasket - maybe, id have to drop the pan and look.
i cant/ couldnt compare the oil pumps because the shot sent the old engine back for core when they were done.
