When ever i put my truck in drive or reverse it clunks underneath. I dont know where its coming from. Suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated.
360 with C6 transmission, NP205 Divorced transfer case.
Just went out there and had my dad crawl under it while i went through the gears and the transfer case is clunking when ever i shift into drive or reverse. But wont do it when its in 4H.
first lets keep things simple here. i would check all the u-joints. with three drive shafts theres a lot of them. if the noise is coming from around the t-case i would check the cv joints there first.
Hiboys don't have cv-joints and they don't have carrier bearings!
If the u-joints are fine the next thing I'd check is for slop in the rear axle. If that checks out good, you need to inspect your transfer case bushings closely and make sure their not wore out and the mount studs/nuts are all tight
montana_highboy, why do you think the automatic equipped hiboys got the T.C. brace and not the 4spd trucks? In my mind, if one or the other needed the brace it would be the 4spd trucks because of the instant shock load that can be applied with a 4spd. The only hiboys Ive seen with the braces were equipped with the np203 fulltime case. Do you suppose it was because of the extra weight of the 203 or possibly had to do with the characteristics of the fulltime unit?

Fordrealdrive, i've never been able to find a definitive answer to that question, i've seen the factory T-case strut on both the np203 and np205 equipped highboys.
But, i've only ever seen the factory T-case strut on C6 equipped highboys, never a np435 equipped highboy, the few times i have seen a T-case strut on a 4spd highboy it was added by the owner.
T/C mounts to left frame rail using one upper, one lower rubber "donut" insulators.
Clunking T/C: Rubber insulators are probably (pick one): flattened out, age cracked, or have disintigrated...gone missing.
No disrespect NumberDummy, but that's incorrect info for a '76 F250 4x4 (divorced/remote mount T/C). The hiboys have 4 special studs with a hex in the middle of the stud for installing into the case then 4 round rubber bushings ......why am I explaining this to you? You know more about it than I do....

You're right: Lame parts catalog pic only shows two rubber insulators, but...

You're wrong: I know less about 4WD than a jackass knows about lap dancing! I've driven exactly one...once. Rented a 1991 Bronco from Hertz in Denver Colorado.
Snowed in at Beaver Creek, had to read the manual to figure out how 4WD operated, then drove I-70 east in white out conditions, took 4 hours to reach the Eisenhower Tunnel. West side of I-70 plowed.
Pulled over, got out, kissed the asphalt. This was the first time I'd driven in snow. Made a vow: No more vacations at Xmas time where it might snow! This year we're taking a Hawaii cruise.

Haha! Sounds like a true adventure to me Bill. I enjoy moments like that. Life tastes sweeter when its closer to the bone!
I once drove a van from Davenport IA. to KCMO pulling a trailer with a ranger on it in blizzard conditions and no trailer brakes!!! Talk about wide eyed and white knuckled the whole way, 13hours at 35mph and I was home!
I will check out the bushings tomorrow. and yes i do have the strut on mine. and will also check for slack in the rear axle. Thanks for the advice guys. Ill get back to yall tomorrow
