2001 transmission problem
The independant shop says it's the Speed Sensor. The dealer then did a diagnostic check. The dealer says it's not the speed sensor, but something inside the tranny. They say the tranny must be dropped to locate the problem.
The truck only has 40,000 miles. Could the tranny be going out this soon?
Any other ideas?
It's not common, but also not unheard of, to have tranny problems with 40,000 miles. Though it's usually the diesel guys that have problems with mileage that low. Did you do the fluid flush and replacement at 30,000?
Hopefully Mark K. will be by to give you some better trouble shooting ideas as to what the problem could be inside the trans.

I had the same thing it was the throttle body that went bad. Changing all the sensors will just be a waste of money if they are not the problem. Go to a qualified mech.

Unfortunately, going to a "qualified mech" can be far more expensive (having them bill you to drop and inspect your trans. when all you needed was a $25 sensor) than some simple trouble shooting. The symptoms described were pretty consistent with the speed sensor going bad.
I'm sure Mark K. will be along to give you the right answer.
