I bought a brand new 03 f250 sd 5.4l 2wd 373 diff crew cab,and i only put 1000 miles on it so far,and i hear a whine noise around 50 mph only when i let go of the accelerator pedal, i must say i am kind of worry about this it is a very minor whine, you really have to pay attention to hear it and i get no vivration. anyone has something to say about it?
It's early in the whole dissapointment process so don't panic about a little noise. Keep and ear on it and give it a few miles to wear in and see how or if it changes. Obviously check your fluids for any metal etc.
If you happen to be at the dealer with the truck it wouldn't hurt for someone to have a listen. Would be better if you can get the foreman or a tech to go out with you so that you can identify the noise exactly.
I found that there were many noises that would come and go as the truck wore in.
Unfortunately the exhaust leak that I have now will not go away. Guess I'm going to have to get up from the computer and actually do something.
Thank`s for your replay john, i`ll do that,it makes sense, still worry,i hope i don`t have a bad rear end, may be sonthing normal in this trucks, just for the hell of it, if someone drives his truck today, turn down the volume on your radio and go a little over 50 mph and let go of the accelerator pedal to see if you hear a little drivetrainkind whine noise it would make me more confortable to know that this is happening out there and is part of the normal brake in period, or maybe is just like that for ever. by the way, i forgot to mention,my truck is automatic. thank`s guys.
Mr truck. I heard numerous noises, whines, rattles, at first with my new truck. They drove me CRAZY at first, but believe it or not, many went away as the miles addes up. I would be patient until around the 5000 mile mark. Then just make note of all the problems and turn them under warranty. I think you will find many of the new truck demons will just go away.......preferably they will jump onto a chevy at a stop light
I know where you're coming from! I, too, just bought a brand new 2003 F250 in late November. Truck has a whopping 358 miles on it now. I heard every noise, rattle, etc. there was. Sometimes I thought the truck didn't shift or didn't accellerate properly. I could've had the truck back to the dealer about once a day. Thankfully, all "mysterious noises" could be attributed to something dumb, ie. ice in between cab and box, snow and ice rubbing tire, etc. Drivetrain and driveability issues only happened once and never again. Give the truck some time, but pay attention to the whine. If it gets louder or more pronounced, take it to the dealer. Computer needs about 500-1000 miles to tune itself to your driving style. Enjoy your new truck as much as I enjoy mine.

Here is what ya do....
The second you hear the whine nail the brakes. When you come to a complete stop Shove her out the door. WALA!!! no more whinning.
A small amount of axle gear whine is common in these trucks. The bed tends to be a bell or type of megaphone and helps transmit axle noise to you. RWD station wagons were notorious for this years ago.
I also have a feeling diesel owners don't experience this as much because engine noise covers up some axle noise.
I had terrible whining in my truck. I took out all the seats except the drivers bucket to look under them an just by chance I noticed the next morning that the whineing had stopped.
I went ahead an left them out.
Problem solved.

Mr truck;
Get your a$$ to your dealer, pronto.
Same thing here, brand new F350 Supercab dually, V10, 3.73 gears. 800 miles. Whine at 50-55 when off the throttle. Guess what? One ride with the service manager and PRESTO! A new set of rearend gears. No questions asked.
Have about 1800 miles on the new set, and so far no grief. Have it looked at, soon!
OK, now you got me nervous. I have the same problem with the wine at 50-60mph when you let off the gas.I tried posting this a few months ago and got no where. You have to listen for it, if you know the sound you will pick it up right away.My parents explorer does the same thing. Could it be a vent on the engine? My truck is a 2000 f-250 4x4 V-10 with 3.73 gears. My parents explorer is a 99 4x4, not sure what gears. I find it hard to belive that they both have bad rear gears. This is an issue we all need to figure out! I can't take the stress!
There have been some concerns with the rear differentials.
Some have been with the limited slip units
others are:
What is being described here does not point to gears themselves but
side carrier bearings within the diff not being shimmed correctly, causing side to side movement of the ring gear on a coast/off to coast/on of the go pedal. This condition if let be will eventually ruin the gears.
Had a 98 explorer with same problems
The rearend had to be setup to spec's to get rid of the noise
It now has 104,000
I have the same problem except mine starts at 10 mph and the whine goes to a scream!! at higher speeds. Took the truck in and I was told that the drive shaft carrier bearing seal is defective and would be replaced (drive shaft and bearing assembly in all.). The bearing seal is seated incorrectly and rubs the drive shaft. I was told that this is not common in the HD series trucks but the SUVs and 150's have had similar problems. You might have this checked out before tearing into the rear-end.
After only 1000 miles, it is difficult to pinpoint anything simply based on the sound. I mean, if you had been driving it for 10k and then noticed a sound, it's likely you'd be picking up on something new, rather than finally discovering something that's been there all along.
I thought for months that something was wrong with my truck. Compared to the Sable I used to drive, this thing is down right noisy... my power steering pump whines pretty good but I got used to it.
I'm sure your warranty covers you for some time yet, so if I were you, I'd wait and see. There is no sense getting work done if it isn't really necessary.
