So, I admit that there is the faintest possibility that someone couldn't resist doing donuts on some wet grass the other day, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that I am now steering a sherman tank that has a really weird crunching in the steering column in the cab. the crunchy noise sounds like my knee when it's cold and it started this morning, but I haven't really had power steering since Thursday. going to have time to work on it tomorrow, fluid level is ok, belt is ok, just no power. how do I know if it's the gearbox and what the hell is that noise?
it could be one of the u-joints that are in the steering column
or it just could be something behind your steering wheel. it might even be the wiring under your dash thats touching the steering rod its self. as far as your steering issuse i had the same problem and it was the same as yours only i was on the mountain and i had to drive off the mountain with out it dam that sucked. and yes it was my gear box that was gone i guess there is no way if your pump still has fulid in it and when you or have someone turn the wheel and the fluid moves in the pump then its still working replace your gear box and try it again shoudl fix it if it doesnt then take the gear box out and put your old one back in and go for a power steering pump
