Looking at 01 Ex

Guys/Gals,

I'm new to the boards here and am looking at purchasing a 7.3L Excursion. I have found one that has fairly low miles however the tranny has been rebuilt within the last couple of months. Any suggestions or other things I should consider with the Ex? Thanks

Ball joints, steering box and sway bar end links are common wear items to check.

Ball joints, suspension, and general appearance. 4wd - do hubs move? Do door locks work? Do you know previous owner? What's mileage on truck?

Mileage is currently at 173k. It is 2WD. Not sure I need 4WD. It's priced at around $9k.

Does the 7.3L really run "forever"? I've read a good bit about the legendary performance of this engine. Should even 265k miles scare me away from purchasing. I have several that I am looking at. I have also seen people on this board getting ungodly MPG, is that normal? Sorry for all the questions, I'm reading up as much as I can "but you don't know what you don't know".

7.3 is awesome engine. Being a diesel it's all in maintenance. Properly maintained engine will keep going, bear in mind rest of body/drivetrain may not fair as well. Higher mileage and more things to repair or replace. 9k is a real good deal on 7.3 with 173k.

Would the transmission being replaced here recently be a concern?

Not if it was rebuilt or new. A wrecking yard trans might concern me.

That trans was the weak link, so most have been rebuilt by the 200,000 mile mark.

What are some other things to look for when testing it out? I am heading down tomorrow to look at it. Thanks again for all the help. Never owned a diesel or Ford for that matter. You guys seem to have a very helpful and non-flaming community going on here. Lots of good info and help. Refreshing to see in the online world.

Ask for maintenance records. Look at condition of vehicle that usually tells a lot. Look at leafs in front if they are flattened out. Drive it - check out steering, accel, make sure turbo spools up, look for items that could nickel and dime you to death. See what under the hood looks like. Look for rear axle leaks. Rust? Check motor oil, coolant levels. Tire ok? List goes on.

Look at seller - if you get a weird vibe RUN.

Not really, what you want to look for is if they installed an inline trans filter near the trans cooler. That'll tell you everything you need to know...

When the mechanical diode ate my trans February 2006 at 127K, Ford installed a reman, but failed to install an inline magnetic filter to catch the shavings. Needless to say, two months later, I was back and they were putting yet another trans in my truck on their dime. They remembered to install the filter and almost 358K later, it's still going strong and hasn't missed a beat.

Left you a message on your profile....

It's funny you posted that I just read it about an hour ago. Thanks. What programmer do you use?

I bought a used one on Craigslist that was in my budget range It is a Diablo Sport Predator 7170. It is pretty old, but I was able to update the firmware and programs via the Diablo website. It really works great for what I need. I may get custom tunes later when I can afford them.

If you get a 7.3L, you will never go back to a gas engine. You will find yourself making excuses to drive it!!! And if you have wife, DON'T LET HER DRIVE IT! You may never see the driver's seat again....

Join Texas Chapter if you end up pulling the trigger on a Ford Diesel or other Ford truck!!!
