Brake Pull

Okay, this is starting to bother me! Had my S/D in for some minor warranty work two months ago. Among other things, I had the service advisor write up that the truck pulls to the left on braking. When I picked up the truck, I was informed that the rotor and pads were replaced. That was around 10,000 miles, it now has 20, 000 and it is starting to pull again. What wold cause this? Also, I am also contemplating upgraded rotors. Who offers them? and if I upgrade the front rotors, would it be smart to upgrade the rear rotors as well......or does it make any difference?

Ceejay,

This topic has been discussed many times in the past. The most popular aftermarket rotors used by people on this site seem to be the "ART" rotors (Applied Rotor Technology). You can check out the Group Purchase forum, and get more info.

I have them on the front of my truck, and it is like night and day compared to stock. The stock rotors seem to warp very easily, especially if towing heavy loads.

You can also do a search on "rotors" and find several threads discussing it.

It could be a caliper hanging up. Maybe they unstuck it when they put the new pads in and now it's back to hanging up again.

I doubt that a rotor would cause a pull - at least not without additional symptoms.

I just had my ART rotors installed today - love 'em! Not quite broken in yet so I can really test under hard stopping power, but they already seem to be an improvement.

As for the pulling, that is usually a line pressure problem (rotors off-balance should give you more of a pronounced vibration or shudder) or perhaps a caliper hanging as others have said.

Maybe bleed the system and refill with fresh fluid to be sure no moisture got in there and then evaporated to leave air pockets behind.

Thaks, all! I have read about the ART rotors and am thinking aout snaggin' a set. My caliper was changed at the dealer I found out. So I hope to think two in a row can't be bad. Maybe there is some trash in the line that is causing the pull. I'll have to investigate further. Anyway, I'm off to contemplate upgrading the rotors.

I've only put on about 125 miles since installing the ART rotors and as Dean said, they are starting to grab harder and stop quicker (gotta get broken in acc. to him). So far very happy. In another 100 miles I'll try a real hard stop when it is safe to do so, and that'll be the real test.

I was quite surprised to see the OEM pads still had quite a bit of life left in them at 41,000 miles, but the rotors looked not-so-good, with a lot of grooving going on (and not that banjo-kind of grooving ---- gotta watch what I say here ;-) in the front pair. Rears looked pretty good when I pulled them off.

Be ready for about a 5-6 week wait from order time until they show up at your door.

I am having the same problem. When I step on the brakes I have a severe pull to the left. I changed the Right side caliper thinking it was hanging up.

I am going to post this as a new post to see what others have to say about this.

If you had a brake pull to the left, you should have replaced the left side caliper, not the right.

I replaced the right caliper and it did nothing. I thought one of the right side caliper pistons may of been stuck. When I pulled it off, one of the piston boots was worn and ripped a little bit. I changed it out, and it did nothing. The pull was still there when I stepped on the brakes. Back I go to the autoparts store. I pick up the left side caliper. Changed it out tonight, after a test drive, it was still pulling to the left, no better or worse than before I changed out the caliper. So now I have two new calipers. I did get them from the same auto parts store and I did make sure they were the same brand. It boils down to two things (please correct me if I am wrong) 1. Brake line pressure 2. Pad/Rotor differences from side to side. Could it be the alignment? I do have a 4" lift under it. I have bled the brakes a ton. The truck only has 47K miles on it, I don't think it should be doing this at this milage. The truck does pull, somewhat proportionally to the amount of brake you apply. Thanks for your reply, I want to get this thing licked without it costing me an arm and a leg.

Strange...

So, just to make sure, the truck doesn't pull at all unless the brake is applied, correct? Then, when the brake is applied, it gets worse the harder you press the pedal? Did you replace the pads? How did the rotors look?

If there is nothing obvious wrong with the brakes, I'd take a look at the front end and make sure there's nothing loose there. You could also try swapping the front tires and see if it changes.

Other than that, I'm stumped.

Correct, the truck doesn't pull unless the brakes are depressed, and the harder they are depressed (while moving) the more the truck pulls to the left.
Both sets of pads looked very good, and the rotors had no groves nor does the steering wheel shimmy when the brakes are depressed. (I have had that happen on numurous other vehicles)

Come to think of it, I didn't notice the pulling until I rotated the tires, but that may of been new truck syndrome.

I will try to swap my front tires

Thanks for all your help

I JUST WENT THREW THE SAME ORDEAL ABOUT A MONTH AGO!
I CHANGED EVERY LINE AND CALIPER SAME PROBLEM THEN MY BRAKE MAN SAID IT COULD BE THE NEW PADS. WE SWITCHED THEM AROUND AND IT PULLED IN THE OPPOSIT DIRECTION.
WE CHANGED THEM AND IT DONE THE SAME THING IN A WEEK SO WE CHANGED TO ANOTHER BRAND A THEY WORKED. HE SAID THAT SOMETIMES THE NEW PADS WILL CRYSTALIZE!

I will try to swap the pads and see if the pull follows. I just got back off a 1500 mile road trip, and it was always there. The one thing I did notice is, as it pulls (while brakeing) and you leave your hands off the wheel, the wheel doesn't turn, it just pulls the truck. And of course, I only did that on an open road in the daytime, when no one was around. Thanks for the input, I will post a reply when I swap the pads, and let you know how everything came out. Thanks Again
