The original "Black" CPS is regarded as being the smoothest sensor out of the bunch. Although with that they also had pretty high failure rates, and Ford recalled and installed Grey CPS's, although the grey's didn't fail like the blacks did(stop you dead in your tracks) they have a slightly rougher idle and commonly fail CCT tests with scanners. The Dark Blue is the latest revision to the CPS's.

CPS=Camshaft Position Sensor, it is how the PCM knows the rotation of the motor to get timing correct.

I just last week installed a International 1825899C93 I had gotten from Clay about a year ago so I called my local IH dealer asking about getting an other IH 1825899C93 and he said all he had was International 1876736C91. And he was trying to tell me that it was the black one but like you pointed out here it is actually the Dark Blue one. I was hoping to find an other black one but I guess there are none to be found.

The dark blues are pretty smooth and I don't fail CCT, and although I haven't tried it the Delphi HTS101 from Advanced auto seems to have a decent reputation as well.

I would say most of us, that have had their trucks for any length of time, likely have a spare in the glove box or center console.

If it fails, it just shuts the truck off, just like you turned off the key.

Now, that said, I have I think 3 spares in my truck...And I have never had a failure in 3 different trucks. But I have seen 7.3's broke down on the side of the road and given them a CPS to get them on their way. Maybe it's just CPS karma for keeping spares as to why I haven't had a failure.

As I said, the Original(Not available anymore) Black CPS made the engine run much smoother. The recall grey had a little noise associated with it and slightly rougher idle, but a very low failure rate in comparison. The dark blue is just the newest revision, and is smoother than the grey.

Now it's funny that you bring up the Delphi HTS101 I seen that too at Advance and I was wondering if they were any good. So it is nice to know that they have a decent reputation. I have always had good luck with Delphi products in my GM's but have never used them on my Ford's. And that is good to know that the dark blues pass CCT. I think I'll get one as a double back up since now I only have the recall replacement gray as a back up.

I was just at the IH dealer the other day for a CPS. I picked up the gray one at the recommendation of the guy at the parts counter. He said he worked at a Ford dealer for years, and that is the one I want for my 2001 7.3. He stated the blue one was not what I needed. I took him for his word, as he was adamant about it. I already have the Delphi CPS from Advance in the glove box.

The two look different, even though they are both gray. The Delphi is bigger around and has a MUCH stronger magnet in it. I was picking up bolts with the Delphi that the IH wouldn't even budge. Not sure what that means in the end, but they are certainly not built to the same standard.
