I'M NEW IN THIS SITE AND I NEED HELP TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING WITH HEADERS BURNING SOME OF THE SPARK PLUG CABLES. I HAVE INSULATED SOME THE CABLE WITH THERMAL MATERIAL BUT IT STILL BURN THEM AFTER A WHILE,I HAVE A 92 F-150 2WD WITH 5.0 ANY ADVICE WILL APRECIATE. THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Go to your local auto parts supplier and get some spark plug wire routing clips/brackets. The clips may have to be re-positioned once or twice around the engine to get the ideal wire positions, but it should fix your problem.
Are they shorty headers? I have heard that they burn up spark plug wires no matter what you try to do. I have a 93 f150 4x4 and I never put headers because everyone I talked to discouraged it.
THE TYPE OF HEADERS I HAVE ARE FROM EDELBLOCK AND ARE BOLT-ON TYPE. I EVEN BOUGHT SOME SHORTY SPARK PLUGS TO MAKE MORE ROOM FOR THE CABLE BOOTS AND ADDED CLIPS TO KEEP THE CABLES FROM TOUCHING THE HEADER'S TUBING. I'M GOING TO TRY BUILT SOME HEAT DEFLECTOR MAY BE THAT WOULD HELP. THANKS GUYS
May sound odd but check your engine timing. Timing being off so many degrees either way can cause extremely high exhaust temperatures. Number 1 reason people burn hearders and other things under the hood for them. If your timing is alright I'd agree with the comments.
Use header wrap on your headers. I went through 2 sets before I had to put the wrap on. JCWhintey sells it, not real expensive either. Added bonus:makes your entire engine run cooler. But this stuff keeps the heat in, and works good.
I'll tell ya what I did, I put a set of gt40p heads on my truck with equal length shorty's. every thing is close. I went with a set of Taylor spirocore wires, with the 90 deg boots, and routed the wires around and as far away from the tubes as I could, and I havn't burned a wire yet. Good luck, Hope this helps.. Hippie
