Turbo

I put in a used 2003 turbo in my 05 a couple weeks ago. Turbo clean no shaft play. Everything was fine till yesterday. I took off from a light as usual shifted probably through 3 gears and then nothin. I had to look at teh tach to see if the engine was actually running. It was at a idle even though I was pushing the accelerator, no psi on the turbo. Black smoke started pouring out. I left off the fuel and was able to get over, reved it in nuetral and some blackish/whitish smoke came out. The smell is what got me, it was a smell ive never smelt just nasty. I got it back on the road and it acted it wanted to go and then all the sudden the turbo kicked in( had boost all the sudden). Its done fine today but when it shifts into overdrive its seems not to have the boost it usually does, can let off the pedal accelerate again and theres boost and whistle. lYou can definately tell w/ the 03 turbo because of the whistle if its engaged or not. What is making the turbo have boost then not? What do you think all that smell was. Thanks for any advice.
