It's probably a good thing though, people drive like complete morons as it is. I'd hate to see what they thought they could do if they had studded tires.

That is interesting. In Colorado they are legal year round on the logic that you can get snow/ice in the high country even in summer. Personally though I think running them year round is pretty silly (softer compound on the tires and the studs wear out).
I run AT type tires on the trucks and carry a set of chains in the winter. I have to say though that I have used the chains just twice, I think. Normally the AT's and 4WD get me where I need to go.
