I purchased some valve covers for my engine. They are tall polished aluminum cover from summit. I just unboxed them 10 minutes ago. One of them has 2 fairly noticeable scratches. What condition should I expect from summit? I would think these need to be returned?
If it's something you could live with you could still bitch about it and maybe get them discounted. Is there a possiblity the scratches could be buffed out?
I just hate doing the customer service dog and pony show. Does anyone know how hard it is to buff/polish aluminum. They are willing to give me 15% off. Which is about $25.
Or I could return them and look for a different set of tall valve covers for a cleveland.
Or exchange them and take a gamble on possibly getting something better or worse.
To buff them out, you need to remove enough material around the scratches so that it's all at the same level. Take the money IMO. You'll scratch them sooner or later.
If you've already talked to Summit and that's their remedy, I'd take it if you can live with the defects. Keep in mind these are flaws from Ford in the Ford box. Summit is just a reseller. They didn't take them out of the Ford box, scratch them and put them back. They're doing their best to take care of you and save the expense and hassle of picking them up from you then trying to get their money back from Ford. My experience with those same covers is they're not finished nearly as nice as their price tag would indicate. And I believe they're clear coated to prevent tarnishing, so there's no good way to polish them without ruining the coating.
Im going to think it over until tomorrow. I just got mugged by a bunch of little kids for my hersheys bars and im tired. I know Ill scratch them sooner or later I may just try to get as much discount as I can.
I may feel different about it tomorrow. Im not mad at summit they were real cool to deal with on the phone.

LOL mugged!!! That's hilarious!!
IF I was to return them...I would ask them to personally inspect them BEFORE shipping...but again they may just tell you what you want to hear...
My ONLY dealing with Summit over a defective part was very positive for their customer relations skills. I think they'll bend over backward to make you a lifelong customer. JMO for what it's worth (not much really).
Ask them for what you want and see if they will step up to the plate. I spoke with Sly, and he gave me everything I asked for plus a t-shirt and hat. 800-517-1035 ext 6366. Tell him Joe sent you (and he will have no idea what you're talking about)
Just one old man's opinion:
If you have a perfect trailer queen show truck and are going after trophies, send them back. Otherwise, install the covers and enjoy the truck.
Ray is a very smart man,( I met him at truckstock) because you will go through the hassle of returning them (which is no big deal as Summit is great at customer service) only to open the box and drop it on the floor by accident (wait, that's what I would do)....I would send them back only if you are building a show truck, they look cool by the way
