I've kept just about everything that wasn't 100% perfect for my truck. Then again, I knew she wasn't going to be a show piece and I'd much rather be cruising in the truck than it being parked another who knows how long due to a minor defect that only I know is there... One more reason it only took as long as it did to get her on the road again!
Drive, drive, drive...
Paul
Paul, I think you are setting the bar pretty high for calling something a show piece. I haven't seen your truck live, but any show would be honored to have your beauty in it. Of course, I would probably say show truck is more an attitude. Something to display versus something to drive.
I say keep the covers, take whatever discount you can get and (as Paul says) drive, drive, drive. You will be the only one to notice. (Well and us now. )
Just one old man's opinion:
If you have a perfect trailer queen show truck and are going after trophies, send them back. Otherwise, install the covers and enjoy the truck.
My thoughts exactly and I would see if Summit could give maybe a 20% or at least the 15% and a T-shirt or cap.
Those things are usually clear coated and the scratches appear to be in the clear coat. Polishing them is easy but if you do and take off the clear coat without re-coating them you have to stay up on polishing them, ask me how I know.
I would take the discount and polish out the scratches. Or if they are very shallow, you may be able to put a clear coat over the marks and see if they dissapear.
The product may not have been scratched by either Summit or Ford. It may be that they were returned by another customer who sent them back and they merely resold them to you without noticing the damage.
I am an old man and will agree with Ray. The problem I run into is after I get over something like this I will be at a car show and some nit pickin idiot will look under the hood and ask you how did you scratch your valve covers. If it happens just don't even comment.
Well I called summit again. They asked about how it was shipped. Since they packaged some other parts in the same box as my valve covers (an oil pan pickup tube, timing chain gear set, and a oil pan dipstick) in the same box with no padding the situation turned really quick into them exchanging my valve covers at no cost. The new valve covers are being shipped as we speak and the old ones will be picked up off my doorstep. No trouble for me at all, I don't even have to fill out the exchange form.
Grade A+ customer service from summit. Shipping me valve covers, without inspecting or receiving the old ones first. Then scheduling UPS pickup, no label required, at my house.

That was my experience with them also. They got my business for life.
Summit is one of the few companies that understands the value of customer satisfaction! By the way they give a 10% discount to any racers if you provide them with a sanctioning org membership or comp license.
