I wouldn't mess with this carburetor yet.

His truck is in limp home mode. No ignition timing advance, due to smog components disconnected. No computer fuel/mixture ratio adjustments, due to the smog control components disconected. It's all set a preset (limp home mode) values.

This can cause the hesitation he's describing, and why the timing is off.

As 83F1503004x4 stated the engine will not run right without those smog components being replaced, or a Duraspark-II, or other ignition system conversion done.

I would choose one of these courses of action and go from there.

If there are smog check requirements in your state, then you will have to fix what you got.

Wow! How'd I miss that. You are right, if he's pulled components off then all bets are off.

BullNose - It is literally all or nothing on those - either you have all of the stuff or you have none of the stuff. Nothing in between.
