Alright guys, my engine smokes sends clouds of smoke out of my exhaust every once in awhile when i start it up, but constantly smokes a white/greyish smoke out, also smokes out of the little round thing that is in the valve cover ( the thing you unscrew to put oil in) any clue why it does this? btw its a 73 429 that sat up for two years i put it in about a month ago
This could be any number of things. White smoke designates water/coolant in the combustion chamber like from a head gasket, cracked head, intake gaskets. Grey/blue smoke could be signs of valve seals leaking, broken oil rings on the pistons allowing oil into the chamber ( would cause smoke coming from oil fill hole known as blow-by). If it's a fresh rebuilt engine, the rings probably haven't seated yet allowing the oil into the chamber too. This is just a few things to look at. BB
How long have you drove it. It could be the same thing as my truck it blows smoke because cylinder 6 is down and I just bought a new coil and it fixed it. That is because if you have lower compression in a cylinder and your spark is weak it might foul up the spark plug and cause unburned fuel to come out in the exhaust.

Yes smoke comes out of the oil fill hole as well, and no it is not a fresh rebuild, the engine sat up for about 2 years, i just stuck it in my truck and started driving, been in about 2 months
Having sit that long, my best guess would be leaking valve seals. With no lubrication the seals would dry-rot and crack allowing oil to leak into the cumbustion chamber. If the Valve guides are worn it would allow the smoke from the burnt oil to escape back into the valve area and out the oil fill hole. Hope this helps. BB
IF it's the valve seals it's not too bad of a job, it can be performed with the heads still on the engine if they have the right tools, if not the heads will have to come off. As for the price I wouldn't know, I do all my work myself. Call the local shops and see what they would charge. BB
