Shaving bumper bolts

Not doing this to my slick, but I thought someone here might have experience at this.

Customer wants to shave the bumper bolt heads off his bumpers.

Is it really as easy as get some carriage bolts(don't want to waste stainless headed bumper bolts), drop them in the holes, weld from the bottom, grind off the heads and then weld from the top, grind smooth and send to the chromer's?

Just seems like I'm missing something.

I can only wonder how one would do this since the carriage style bolt is required to hold the bumper to the chassis.

Factory bolts can be used as just a stainless cap. the bolts are not stainless.

Just install bumper as it should be with the alignment you want, take a bolt out from each side (staggered) then put a non locking nut on with a flat washer and adjust to depth you want it in bumper. (prob 1/2 bumper thickness) then tack each, weld and do the same to the other two.

Yesterday, I talked to someone at a chrome shop that's trying to get my business.
They said they drop a bolt through the hole and put a washer on it. Then weld the bolt to the washer and the washer to the bumper. Then shave the heads off the bolts and fill in with weld from the outside. Grind smooth and polish, then proceed with chroming.

They also said they'd do it...for $50 a hole...my cost. In the case of the bumper I'm sending that would be an additional $500 over and above the approximent $470 to do the chrome.

Ol' Chip Foose sure doesn't make it look that expensive on TV, does he?

Both B9A-17758-A (7/16" -14 x 1 3/4") & C3AZ-17758-A (7/16" -14 x 1 1/4") bumper bolts have stainless steel caps that were "spun on" to the heads of the bolts. Can be pried off.

I knew that. No existing bolts to cut. Trying to save the customer the difference in price between the bumper bolts and the regular carriage bolts.

Wonder if a flathead fender bolt would'nt serve the same purpose, they come in different sizes and material. Would not want the head any thinner than the heads of a fender bolt on a flareside.
