I came back from a weekend camping trip, and found that my dad had bought and installed Windows 8 on our main desktop computer. I had downloaded the Beta when it came out and gave it a whirl, and after a month or so, decided I didn't like it
Well lo and behold, we now have it. I spent probably an hour and a half today trying to figure out how to use it, all while burning up the time I needed to be using to do homework.
Here are all the gripes that I have with it;
No start button
Full screen windows
Metro
Buggy (especially with the 64 bit version)
Chrome browser kept crashing
Hard to access a lot of the features that are in 7
Doesn't handle dual monitors very well
Maybe I'll get used to it, or maybe I won't. I figure I'll just end up re-installing 7 and set it up for a dual boot so my dad can use 8 while I can use 7.
So, has anyone else used it? If so, do you like it, and if not, what don't you like?
WinXP is 10 years now and many businesses have been using this OS for at least that long. Its "back compatibility" function meant it would run earlier OS software. Being flexible this way make sense.
I began using WinXP in early 2005 with my first PC that came with it (HP Pavilion P4) It was a gift from a friend after a previous computer died (it had Win98se...loved that OS). But in late 2007 it's motherboard suffered capacitor corruption and fried.
I decided to buy another new computer from HP, but not after finding they only offered VISTA. However, all I ever heard about VISTA were complaints. Especially from the gamer community. Overall it was felt the OS was "rushed" out the gate before getting all the bugs out.
So went to Dell. Dell had just released their new Inspiron 530 series in mid 2007. And still offered WinXP as an alternative to VISTA if you wanted. Now I had a Dell years before and their proprietory requirements were high....you couldn't switch out stuff with non Dell products. Well that policy had changed since those days. You can now swap out/upgrade nearly everything with "off the shelf". So ordered the 530 with WinXP and never looked back.
My son built his own computer and, for his uses, installed Win 7. He is quite happy with it. At present, he sees no reason to install Win 8 at this time.
There is no need in most cases to run a new operating system right after release.
I let the "early adopters" do the testing for me or I run it in a virtual machine which is a dandy way to have many operating systems available at the same time.
You can test Windows 8 without installing as a main OS. I haven't bothered yet since I have no 8 machines to support.
